George Williams, (married Mary Kelly) my 4 times great grandfather sail on the Stakesby in 1823 from Cork to Quebec City, making his way to Montreal and then north to a small community in the foot hills of the Laurentian Mountains, St Columban. I still have family living there to this day, just over 200 years since his arrival.

I am not sure Teresa, in two similar cemeteries I have visited there were numbered iron crosses to identify the grave, this would be correlated with a list kept privately by the hospital/asylum.

We are a lot of headstones dated from 1711 onwards, seema a v specific date but I think I am just remembering those ones. Definitely some from 1710s, butthey would be associated with upper middle classes. Labouring classes only started being able to afford headstones in twentieth century. Credit union I think made them affordable for all.

@HistoricGraves Жыл бұрын
Patricia, for ireland I rely on Mary Timoney's book on Sligo headstones *Had Me Made* - otherwise there's a lot of flakey information out these. I use page 12 and 13 of this to describe the symbols www.caringforgodsacre.org.uk/wp-content/uploads/2020/06/Mytum-2019e-Recording-Code-sheets-v2.pdf. As to what they mean I have yet to find a definitive guide for Ireland.

Something the area needs is more services offering hackney cars and drivers for hire. I found several offerings in Galway but spent 3 nights in Waterford, wanted to go to Ardmore for 1/2 day and couldn’t find cars/drivers for hire. Many tourists are older and don’t wish to drive in Ireland. Even bus service a few times a day. I couldn’t figure out the local bus routes.
@HistoricGraves

Good point Rick. There is a new rural bus service called LocalLink that makes most places accessible but of course help may well be needed to know where to begin given most villages do not have bus stations.

We were staying at the nearby Pembroke Kilkenny Hotel from 8 to 11 May 2023 and went to visit this graveyard. Unfortunately, the entrance gate was locked up and the grass was seriously overgrown. So disappointing so I searched KZbin for any information and found this interesting video, although not quite as good as actually being in the graveyard.

I posted a comment on the Ardmour Cemetery, vid that was a couple of years old, , so attached it below My Grandfather is buried here, his name David Mullanny, Navy Officer. Feb 1962 he died, i didnt know him long as i was born in 1960, he never saw my sister, who was born in April 62, i have a lot to say about this place, my Wife Jan and i went over in about 1998, to find my Grandfathers history, and more about my unique name, his grave, was a bonus, but took a lot of searching, and after hours walking about random headstones, and in Random cemeteries!! i found him, a double plot, for him and his Wife Mary (my grandmother) sadly she never went there, buried in Croydon, UK, were they lived, on the grave were Three glass viles, intact, with rust coloured metal petals, that my Grandmother, Father and his Brother David left in 1962, incredible they were still there !, Also, there were some flowers that had been left on the grave, so next day on our way home, we cleaned up the stone work, with some bleach and a stiff brush, also some flowers, and a buisness card, from me, but never heard anything back, his grave is further up the hill from the tower and not far from the upper walls,
