He was really good, especially around his last ABA/early NBA years, but his time as a top player was just too short to be seriously considered in LeBron's company. But very few players deserve the comparison. He deserves to be in the HOF.

Lebron has the luxury of playing in a soft league with no talented big men, or any defensive standouts at any position. Plus add the ticky tacky officiating and ESPN telling him he's the greatest thing ever... George had none of that and played against men, not one and done prima donna's. Lebron would've been pushed around by him, Nate Thurman, Willis Reed and even Daryl Dawkins. The 70s NBA had the greatest players ever top to bottom.

When We hear A Celebrity or Public Figure say something We tend to Believe that it's fact or true,But this is A perfect example of that's not always the case.THE STAPLE SINGERS is and Always have been throughout Their Career a Gospel Group whom Sung and Recorded Spirituals and or Gospel Songs.THE STAPLE SINGERS Never crossed over, there is really no such thing.Their Songs crossed over.Their Songs were played on Non-Gospel Radio,We heard them and Liked them.Their Songs crossed over not Them.Their Songs were Placed on juke boxes in Bar rooms, clubs, and We Played them and Danced to them.I remember When the Song BELLE came out by AL GREEN.It also was played on Secular radio stations and juke boxes,We or at least I belly rubbed or slow danced to it.But when I stopped dancing and listened to it,The opening verse was BELLE THE LORD AND I HAVE BEEN FRIENDS FOR A MIGHTY LONG TIME....You don't get anymore Gospel than that.Music crosses over Not Believers or Artists.😁😎✌🤘💙🖤luv ya byo eJ

Philly fan here. 1977 playoffs exposed him. That 76er team should have rolled through the Finals 4-0. Once they got Dr. J, McGinnis could'nt accept the fact that he was no longer the clear-cut best player on the team. The chemistry of that team was never great, especially compared to the well-blended Blazers coached by former Sixer GM Jack Ramsey. The pivotal moment - "fight" between Dawkins and Lucas in Game 2. Even though the Sixers won the game and Dr. J dunked over the entire Blazer team the rest of the series, it was clear that Portland somehow got momentum and 1 against 5 wasn't going to get it done. George's chance at redemption was Game 6. He finally woke up after sleepwalking through the first five games and scored 28 pts (Dr. J had 40). Down 2 points with 3 seconds left, McGinnis has a chance to tie the game and his shot comes up short...and I had the misfortune to watch the short-lived birth of "Blazermania"! The '77 Finals was a microcosm of his career: Dominant during the regular season, but when the chips were down and it counted the most against the best competition, he wilted under the pressure and failed to deliver. From there his career went into a downward spiral. When he first came to town I'll never forget the billboards in Philly: "Let George Do It". After the 1977 debacle, it was replaced by the horrific "We Owe You One!" - cringe-worthy. Even Dr. J couldn't get it done until they got Moses Malone in '83. Now THAT was one of the best teams of all time! Considering the entirety of his NBA career, I thought he was fortunate to be voted into the Hall of Fame.

This must be some kind of joke. Noone in their right mind would compare McGinnis to Lebron. Lebron actually plays better in the playoffs. He doesn't fold up in the playoffs like a cheap suit the way McGinnis did. You obviously were not following the 76'ers in those days or you would already know this.

kzbin.info/www/bejne/oZemcnaqjbl4o7M I don't know how they could go straight from the Wilt years directly to the Dr J years without ever mentioning George McGinnis coming to town and resurrecting the team and then playing absolutely horrible in the playoffs EVERY FLIPPIN YEAR until they finally had to trade him for Bobby Jones. I think that was when the term "addition by subtraction" was coined in the world of sports. I've never seen a star player, play as badly as McGinnis did in the playoffs while he was here. He was so bad I almost felt sorry for him. They had to get rid of him because the fans were completely fed up with him. Trading McGinnis, was just as important as adding Moses Malone to getting the 76'ers a championship.

I'm kind of surprised George McGinnis lived this long. He must have stopped smoking so much after he stopped playing in the NBA (?) He was so addicted to smoking that he would spend halftime in the hallway smoking ! It's hard to believe anyone with that mentality would spend time in the offseason training, if he wouldn't even stop smoking. What a waste of talent !!

One of the worst injustices in Philadelphia history was committed when 76er brass said that George McGinnis & Julius Erving couldn't play together!!! Losing McGinnis cost us the 1976-1977 NBA FINALS vs. Portland!!! McGinnis brought us back from the HORRORS of that woeful 9-73 season that set the standard for futility in the NBA!!! After the loss of WILT CHAMBERLAIN, (traded to the Lakers for scrubs) there was little the 76er could do. Well removed from that magnificent season that produced 68 wins and the NBA FINALS CHAMPIONSHIP, with CHAMBERLAIN'S REMOVAL from the 76ers we had little to fight with or for!!! George "Big Mac" McGinnis, put us back into the NBA Conversation. Then we got Dr. J, & needless to say Philly was the TALK OF THE NBA!!! Next thing we know McGinnis is gone!!! I'd rather they said that they (The 76ers) couldn't AFFORD BOTH OF THEM, THAN TO INVENT THE BULLSHYT THAT THEY COULDN'T PLAY TOGETHER!!! Thus one of the GREAT DUO'S THAT NEVER WAS, WAS TAKEN FROM US IN THE BLINKING OF AN EYE!!! WOW Big Mac & Dr. J....what they could have accomplished together!!!

Pat Williams created that team that went to the finals against Portland. He didn't use any sense he just grabbed talent. McGinnis, Erving, Collins, Caldwell Jones and get rid of the rest because that wasn't a team it was a bunch of immature guys who wanted to try and show Dr J what they could do. Instead of getting a strong point guard to distribute the ball they stuck with Henry Bibby, no offense but he wasn't a strong enough presence at the point guard. They had Gene Shue who was a really good coach but he was so remote it was like he was in a different building. Chuck Daly should've been hired when the fired Shue and I bet they would've won.
