Before Dragon Ball Z came over to North America, Akira Toriyama was largely unknown outside Japan. Before Dragon Ball, Akira Toriyama made a manga series known as Dr. Slump, it was very popular in Japan, and he even received a Shogakukan Manga Award in 1981. However, outside of this and a few one-shots, buy and large, he was still relatively unknown. It's amazing how Akira Toriyama went from being relatively unknown to becoming one of the greatest manga artists of all time. He was truly a legend.

What dragon in the beginning?

This was my first anime, I even remember the first episode I watched was 'Tien goes all out', he sacrificed himself to try to kill Nappa. I didnt know the story or history before that, but i saw people trying desperately to survive against a way stronger enemy. Then piccolo's sacrifice and the whole battle with Vegeta. This series was awesome and i loved the big fights. Maybe it dragged on at times, but this will always be the greatest anime ever made to me.

I'm 35 years old. Recently I've discovered that my little nephew is watching DBZ reruns, he's on the Cell Saga now. He's 7, he will probably live long enough to see the year 2100. That's another Generation shaped by Akira Toriyama. Dragon Ball will be eternal.
