In this scene Ratched is trying to re-establish order and the control that she lost after that impromptu fishing trip. Things sure escalated quickly as Cheswick has gained the confidence to stand up to Ratched from McMurphy.

This movie is quite sad but true because that's how mental hospitals were back then in the 1970s.

Yea, I love when Chief gets into the fight and tosses that black orderly around like a rag doll. He began starting to take to McMurphy's rebellious attitude and, although at this point we still think he's deaf/dumb, it shows that there is something more to him that meets the eye, something I didn't realize when I first saw this obviously. On a different note, I do see why there are some that proclaimed this movie was racist (and sexist) though, not that I care. I enjoyed it for its entirety.. I mention this because the orderly's are all black and simply unredeemable which pis*ed a lot of black men off during the time this was filmed. And obviously the antagonist is a female, but a real "disney witch" of a nurse.

I just noticed how weirdly (questionable) Harding's behavior is. Is he smelling the other guy's feet or looking for his stogie? Because it looks like he's getting off on it lol. I guess the "allusions" were right huh?

This is so hard to watch. This poor man probably has an anxiety disorder. Hes panicking because Ms. RATCHETT HAS DENIED HIM THE FREEDOM to have just one cigarette. He wasnt asking for much. We can all see how frustrated this man is. This emotional outburst could have been prevented.

Ive been to several mental institutions and some of the staff truly belong in there. Nurses would flirt with patients, I almost got ones number until another one sabotaged it. Especially co ed facilities. really is wild in there

What gives one person the right to rule over others?? This is why people get violent and revolt. Not to be evil but to gain control over their own lives.

The acting in this scene is remarkably well done. This brief scene just a bit over 2 1/2 minutes represents the magic of this movie. The chemistry between the actors, the way they appear on screen acting with each other, one can easily see why it won the Academy Award for Best Picture for that year.

When McMurphy punched the attendant in the face, he should have just hurried over and gave Cheswick the cigarettes. But no, he just had to continue the fight, even after the Chief had the attendant in his arms and he was perfectly in the clear. Either way, entertaining scene.

I used to work as a CNA in a State Hospital, and I often felt like McMurphy because I found myself sitting with the patients - watching WWE Raw - sharing laughter. They were treated HORRIBLY otherwise, as if they were less than human. We had nurses who would have power trips over Graham Cracker rations, and often fights would break out, but I almost always understood what led them to do it.
