Its the voice. His voice and square face and stillness. That does it. He's right. The material is superior, both the book and the adaptation.

He's such a brilliant actor. Here in the states he's not a name. So, good thing I prefer UK dramas. Trying to watch everything he's in.

What a very interesting notion. He is a superb actor and, and as many comments have identified, he does have a glorious voice, but I guess the years will tell whether he achieves such gravitas.
