18:27 Virgilio Noè: "Extra omnes." Noè was reportedly a pain for Luciani to deal with too; he was the one who kept telling Luciani not to talk to sentry guards on duty and so forth; "it's never been done before." Luciani saw nothing wrong with that and continued to talk to them; he then started to reason "with men like Noè as one does with children" (David Yallop, "In God's Name").

"And if they elect me I will say 'I am sorry. I refuse'" (Albino Luciani to Fr Mario Senigaglia). Luciani was however - as per research conducted after - to be overwhelmed by the speed and size of the vote. Giovanni Benelli vigorously and very effectively lobbied for Luciani after Paul's death. It worked so well the conclave never went beyond two days.

Luciani became pope thanks to the intense and effective lobbying by a close friend of his, Cardinal Giovanni Benelli. It was so successful the conclave never lasted more than one day. Benelli, though, was most unaware that his close friend never wanted to be pope; before accepting the papacy Luciani said "May God forgive you for what you have done in my regard" before accepting the papacy. It has been said that Luciani was so "overwhelmed by the speed and size of the vote" (David A. Yallop, "In God's Name") that he forgot about saying "I am sorry. I refuse."

Do you have this full broadcast? I'm seeking the dramatization that plays after the biographical portion. It is part of the "Look Up and Live" portion of the CBS Religious and Cultural Specials Block. Also titled "Bleased John Neumann".

Schieffer made the comment that CBS News correspondent Winston Burdett had a report. Gracious! Burdett was around back in the days of Vatican II. I can recall his reports about how the Mass was going to go from Latin to English. That was 18 years earlier.

I just noticed now, in the Romanian version of "Video Wabbit" on a VHS tape, it seems this scene was too aggressive for the translator of the company that used to produce Looney Tunes VHS tapes with Romanian subtitles. Instead of translating "Welcome to "I beat your wife!", they simply translated "Welcome to my show!". Auch! XD I understand classic Looney Tunes can be offensive to today's kids but this censor seems a bit excessive as before, CN would censor many Looney Tunes classics even more. Also, the Romanian VHS tape producers decided to translate that Video Wabbit" episode (we didn't ask them of course). XD

Funny that Luciani was not mentioned -- even though two other popes of the 20th Century had also served as Patriarch of Venice when elected pope, and even though Paul VI, when visiting Venice, took off his papal stole and put it on a thoroughly embarrassed Luciani.

My uncle was elevated to the bishopric at St.John Lateran (known as the Pope's chapel) on 30th July, 1978. He had served with the Vatican's diplomatic service since the early 60s and was about to become Papal Nuncio to Rwanda. In honour of his consecration, he was invited to attend a private audience with Paul VI, along with family members that had flown to Rome from Dublin and London. Despite his frailty, he was very much himself and full of conversation as he was introduced to the various members of the party. There was no intimation he would die just three days later. I suspect this will have been one of his very last audiences of his papacy. My uncle was His Excellency, the Most Reverend Archbishop Thomas A. White (1931-2017)

That scene in the movie was a not so subtle reference to the totally unexpected death of John Paul I, about 7 weeks after the death of Paul VI

There was a two-part episode of ABC News Nightline on May 13 and 14, 1981. The episode focused on the shooting of Pope John Paul II. Ted Koppel, the host, interviewed various people, including Dr. Peter Bruno, a physician; James Walker, a reporter for ABC News; Mustafa Gursel, a Turkish journalist; Claire Sterling, a terrorism expert; Father Robert Lynch, a US papal travel coordinator; Father Robert Drinan, a former congressman; Bill Blakemore, an ABC News correspondent; Henry Kissinger, a former secretary of state; Father Francis X Murphy, a Vatican observer; Max Robinson, an ABC News reporter in Chicago; Bettina Gregory, and Sam Donaldson.👍

Sometimes you Catholics really leave me confused. And didn’t baptisms take place with total submersion, so sprinkling a little water would not seem to be baptism. That would not be the right form. And I don’t know if you believe that this priest was gonna go to hell because he was never receive the sacrament and everything. And does that also mean that the soul of an unborn child is doomed to hell for not being baptized before they die. Or if it’s a miscarriage a few weeks after conception.
