I've such respect for this man. I took just a few classes w Marion back in the 1980's and he instilled in me such confidence to be a vocalist, a vocal performer. What a gift he gave me. Thank you, Marion Thinking of you warms my heart.

Mr. Cowings sung his vocal solo in his own lyrics which delivers an atmosphere of the street in the Swing Era. What a storytelling skill he has ! PLS check his 'Freddie Freeloader' too. Such a fun !

Marion Cowings ‘Freddie Freeloader’ Vocalese Lyrics One free Freddie Tell me Truly Just what horn do you play? Once I Asked him Why so Happy? He said it’s cos music loves me. When trouble surrounds you, and bounds you You feel like flying, but you’re crying You needn’t pay the whole day, Never mind the reason This isn’t the moanin’ groanin’ season. Of course it takes some time to learn the way of smiling everyday to win Ain’t so hard is what you should know. You opened you heart and then say Now which way Is it conceivable to nourish a frown for sorrowful days And harbour a grin at the same time Never considered there are some beautiful ways to win Working with your fingers and your toes then never count ‘em. The feelin’ you get will never free ya Bet a buck, and win the lotto perhaps I meanin’ to say we’re like a robin hoods children, Because the songs we’re singing they, they never end. We’re like a tide movin’ to and fro, Bound to reach an all historical autumn low That’s part of our nature. However, it’s no indication to rest Because the blues are becoming pest and it’s something, we’re meaning to lose. I took my problem down to Philly, And then to Fred Here’s what Freddie has said Get down and never let up Here’s a clue I hope you won’t mistake it. I got my limp from trying to trample the blues without my shoes, But now I’m smiling Even the meanest cat won’t hurt your feelings if you’d only maintain your singin’ That’s all I’m saying dig. Thankyou Fred. You cleared up my head Now I can walk with kings And keep the common touch too I was so afraid I didn’t know what to do Thank you a lot. Thank you Freddie, For telling me the truth in bop talk Things with meaning mean more If they’re felt instead of being read. You know that life can be a pain, if when you’re young you miss your train It’s just a simple thing Unblessed feet can make no scenes But if they’re guided They will walk in freedom A guy like me who’s singin’ every song knows he’s never singing wrong The trouble with me is cos I’m in love dig it I’m tired of bein’ told I’m flippant Cos from the very day I found my key I felt the world upon me Freddie what it can do to ya It made me cry some Though I should fly Because the world and all its woe has got me down letting me know that it’s a loan (alone?) I must live my life Here’s a silly question Can I be lonely? When every song I sing is to my one and only I’m gonna sing, I’m gonna shout. Until I’m too old to get about And then they’ll sing of me. Piano solo x2 chorus by Kenny Barron One free Freddie Tell me Truly Just what horn do you play Once I Asked him Why so Happy He said it’s cos music loves me

0:50 I have a lot of respect for Marion Cowings, but this is not how it's done. He says the song and key all at the same time without really waiting for confirmation from the other musicians. Confirm the song, then the key. Repeat until people agree.

There is nothing at all that has anything to do with leading a band in this segment!...SINGERS, should know there keys, and musicians should know it...regardless (Fake book or not.....transpose if need be)….Band leaders and sidemen need to know this is not the real deal...…..kind of lame!
