Loved hearing about the premises and reasons for abandoning. I abandoned a lot of novels in progress when I first started out - mostly because I didn't know how to write or plot, and then, once I learned both (to varying degrees), I was no longer interested in the stories and had outgrown them. Now that I'm more confident in my writing, I've only properly abandoned three - a) a SF novel with a really complex story concept that I can't unknot, b) a SFF novel that I really loved up until the Break into 2, but then kind of lost its way (because the incident at the break into 2 (which I still think is the right one) pushed it onto a trajectory I didn't really like), and c) a YA space opera that would need four books to be properly finished, and I start to feel suffocated by series when I get to the third book. I like the idea of a series, but I hate feeling constrained by one protagonist and one story world.

I kind of love outgrowing old plots (or just ideas masquerading as plots)! Lately I've found old ideas working their way into current works . I'm really curious about that SFF novel of yours. The right incident pushing the story the wrong way sounds like a cool writing question to explore!

@@briar.writes The story was about a woman who gets involved in a kind of futuristic civil war. At the end of Act 1 she loses her son to a stray bullet, which removes the thing that would have stopped her from moving to the city and being involved in the war - but I found it hard to write her character in an active way because the grief was just too much. She couldn't do anything active because her profound sadness overwhelmed everything. Actually, just writing this out now makes me think I just need to have a larger time jump for the transition (or at least fragmented scenes that show passing of time and growth) - so maybe it's not an abandoned wip after all!

I am definitely a person who suffers from the doing too much. The story I'm currently working on (and have been working on for years now) originally started out with 6 main POV characters and I've now kept those characters but each romantic couple is going to get their own duology/trilogy set in the world. haha. It might still be too much, but I feel like it's going a lot better this way than what I was trying a few years ago. I've also said to my friend that I wish there were clones of me that were able to work on every single project that it's in my brain and then we all come back together at the end of the day and I've made progress on everything I want done. haha too much to do, not enough time.. And sometimes I just have to do a bunch of brainstorming with a friend and talk everything out because that usually helps me clear things up. New sub here, found you through a search and you came up on a "people also watched" 😁hoping the rest of camp goes well for you! xo

Ouch... I feel the including too much plot in one book but you've outdone me. I had the plot of two books in one and am still trying to separate them currently. I have to talk out ideas and plots with people. Talking aloud, since my brain runs faster than my mouth, allows me to come up with scenarios that I hadn't thought of before. Just an idea but maybe you could put that they are ace on the back of the book but leave the rest as is, that way the book would not have to mention it in a forced way from the characters yet still letting people know. An ace book that isn't about being ace is great but like you said the mention of it is still valuable while we have very little representation.
@briar.writes
@briar.writes Жыл бұрын
That is definitely something I've been thinking about - a way to include her identity in the back cover or blurb so it's easy to find for rep. Part of me just wants to put, like, the Ace flag in a corner or something, but make it searchable.

I suggest doing more reaserch. Reaserch all the genres first, at least the major ones. Pick one of them. Then reasearch the genres. Fantasy is the genre that is my favorite. I have dove deep into it. The main division is high fantasy and low fantasy. Low fantasy is where the setting is in the real world and the supernatural stuff is hidden. A major example is Harry Potter. High fantasy is where there is an entire fantasy world seperate from the real world. There is no depiction of the real world at all. A major example is Lord of the Rings. There can be a third category of portal fantasy. This is where characters go from the real world to the fantasy world. The worlds are seperate except for special travel portals. A major example is the Chronicles of Narnia. When I do my own stories, I give the general labels of high fantasy and hard magic. Beyond that, I just do my own thing. I like to focus on magic. I like to have most characters be magic users, and go into the details and depth of magic. Paranormal is not a subgenre of fantasy. It is a subgenre of horror. Paranormal is scary spooky stuff that is supernatural. It often has undead creatures. This is creatures like zombies, vampires and ghosts. Werewolves also go in there. I can think of examples of paranormal horror. There is Dracula, American Werewolf in London and Nightmare Before Christmas. Maybe Frankenstien, Ghostbusters and Five Nights at Freddie's count too. They have some tech, so they are a tad like sci-fi. Maybe Phantom of the Opera counts. The titular character doesn't really have supernatural powers. However a phantom creature fits in with paranormal. If a story focuses on werewolves, then that definitly counts as paranormal horror. That is why I gave American werewolf in London as an example.. It is a basic story about a man cursed to be a werewolf. He finds a way to break the curse. A werewolf can only be in a fantasy if it is a small part. I can think of a couple of examples. Harry Potter is a fantasy because it is about magic school. Yet there is one teacher that is a werewolf. That is Lupin. World of Warcraft is a Fantasy game due to the magic, and the supernatural creatures. Most playable races are typical fantasy races. There are elves, dwarves, orcs etc. Yet there is a playable werewolf race and zombie race. That is some horror. There is even a playable race of blue aliens. So there is also some sci-fi. Twilight is a special case. It is so close to being paranormal horror. However that is a romance. The romance genre is easy to get confused on because lovey dovey stuff in the media in general. The one trait that defines the romance genre is that getting romance is the main goal of the story. It is the main focus. In Twilight, Bella has getting her boyfriend as her main goal. So this is a romance. It just so happens that the boyfriend is a vampire. There is a lot of vampires and werewolves in the story. One could argue that Twilight is mainly romance with some horror. It is a wierd mixture. Recenly a similar movie came out. It is called Lisa Frankensteine. Lisa gets a zombie-like boyfriend, and that is the main focus of the story. So Lisa Frankenstein can also be called a romance movie with some horror. Some scenes were really funny, so one could argue that it was partly a comedy. Lisa Frankenstein is so good. Paranormal is the most famous subgenre of horror. Other subgenres include cosmic, psychological, slasher and splatter. Those are the ones I could think of off the top of my head. Eww...Splatter. No thank you. I have a weak stomach. I guess paranormal is similar to fantasy because both deal with the supernatural. However both have very different vibes and use very different creatures. Fantasy creatures are thinks like dragons, unicorns and fairies. There are things more awe inspiring and whimsical. Dragons are scary, but even they have a grandeur to them. They are not spooky at all. Paranormal creatures are more spooky and creepy. Maybe witches can go either way, because they can be creepy. However I think they fit more in fantasy.
