I recently tried Carv for the first time and felt the exact same way about the active coach and it just made skiing frustrating instead of fun. I’ve noticed the same issues trying to review my historical data and trying to understand what’s my average. hopefully they bring some of those challenge modes back since I think I would enjoy those more

picking the best 10 consecutive turns would be amazing. maybe showing an overall score for the entire run and also the best 10 consecutive turns score. because im also sick of skiing 10-12 turns and then slamming on the brakes. makes me look dumb on the slopes
@res_ipsa-REXКүн бұрын
I agree that the new hardware is annoying to fit onto your powerstrap. Also, you are spot on about using Carv while skiing. Constantly resetting the goals gets annoying while you are skiing. Getting onto those cattracks can really kill your score. Find those parts of the run that allow you to make at least 10 turns and then stop to secure the score before the run flattens out. I do like the turn by turn sounds of success or failure when skiing. Let's you realize in real time what Carv wants you to do. Carv also has not recorded or been "on" during certain segments of runs which is annoying too. Carv is best when you are skiing alone as it gives you something productive to do (work on your ski ability).

As others have already stated, this review was honest throughout while getting to the point without marketing direction. The two releases of Carv were compared and contrasted, and real-world usage examples of Carv 2 were given.

I’m scoring 150-155, and I’m using in just as a monitor. It’s a great tool but doesn’t really help teaching how to improve, just gives some brief instructions. I think they use some sort of formula to calculate the final score, so if you are like me who is skiing at a small resort in Midwest, I can only make 10 quality turns😂. So when I check the scores, it is always lower than my best values, like if my maxIQ is 161 but the final is 152. Overall, it’s better than nothing for a self learner, and kept me on slope longer.
@angelinaoutsideКүн бұрын
I'm curious, did you improve your ski IQ a lot since you started using Carv or were you already doing 150+ right away? 150 for me seems so unattainable now...I was closer last season at 144, but now it feels impossible!
@qin1992Күн бұрын
@ I never used the first generation, but from the reviews I’ve watched, it seems like they need more effort to get a higher edging angle compared to the first generation.

What would be your advice on handling the steepness of double blacks? I am not a beginner and I like to carve low and fast, but I actually don't know how to ski really steep slopes slowly and safely.

Stay forward and pole plant. I think practicing jump turns can also be helpful. Also getting comfortable with moguls. I might not look great on steeps, but I sure can ski them slow :D

Must admit i kinda like the active coach for how it's not letting any lazyness slide. Also that they want you to carve everywhere, be it shortturns on the cattrack or maxspeed through moguls, pretending you're Candide Thovex😹 Sure, if you ski 4hours and didn't do any skidded turns your legs will be toast, but i guess that's the point?

Thanks for the great review! I need to try it, but in general the idea of it doesn't sound like a great starting point for learning to ski/carve. My favorite training tool for learning skiing is watching others and video of myself...then a constant quest to mimick in the context of my own anatomy and strength. The reason we can't ski like teg ligity is likely a very complicated cocktail of anatomy, power, athletisim, coordination, and technique. The idea that we can ski like one of the best olympians by simply understanding some data is a bit aspirational.
@angelinaoutside2 күн бұрын
I think it’s easier to get there with the data when you already know how to carve…which I don’t 😆

I learned to ski way back when I was a teenager but never progressed beyond easy green slopes - and only went a couple times too. I did ski once more in my 30s in West Virginia - again just one trip - so, again, remained on green slopes. About 3 years ago, I randomly decided to take my family on a ski trip to Keystone (from Florida). Keystone was a bit out of my league - even on the green slopes, but somehow I made it down Schoolmarm (a couple falls). Regardless, I was hooked. The next season, I did Breck and discovered the Base 9 area. Then, we decided to move to Colorado (July 2023). The 23/24 season, I got 13 days on snow but still didn't manage to make it beyond the green slopes - except for the blue-ish section of Red Rover at Breck. This season, with the help of a couple full day lessons, I managed to get down Cashier without falling (first blue). I still regard myself as a beginner - perhaps advanced beginner. So, I've been looking at possible tools like Carv to help me become better and doing the blues more confidently.

Taos is one of my favorite mountain destinations! It is near my 2nd home in Santa Fe. It has many steeps for powder days. Plus Al's run is a wonderful mogul run, especially when they get built up. When I skied Al's right before the Covid shut-downs, it took me a few laps to find my line that would allow me to do it continuously. You did an awesome job on that! In my opinion, challenging yourself to do a challenging run continuously is very underrated as a way to improve technique over time. When I first moved to South Lake Tahoe, the bump skiers I met here would do long bump runs without being winded. I would be totally gassed when I got on the lift with them. Their technique, at the time, was so much better than mine that it was virtually effortless for them, but definitely not effortless for me! Also, continous allows you to get a lot of repetition. I think you have an excellent approach to learning: get a lot of skiing and mix it in with lessons and clinics from time to time. Well done! ⛷️ 😊

Genuinely curious: What is the pole clacking at the start of the videos? See this on almost every video
@Sokolva6 күн бұрын
It’s a kind of good luck charm / psych up for skiers starting a run. When I was in ski school growing up in the 90s and early 2000s, the rumor was that if you clicked your poles before a hard run it would make you ski better. Most people do it before something tough or intense for them, when they are really excited, when they are performing for an audience (such as below a chairlift, or making a video) or when they are going to ski fast or intensely for their level. It can also be viewed as a kind of ritual that gets people into the game. A lot of people click their poles behind them as they ski instead of in front, but this person may have been doing it for the benefit of the video camera in front of them.

I’m not an avid skier but it must drive people crazy to see someone vlogging (hate that word) in the middle of a run. Is it really necessary to give an update halfway down a trail? Not dying to be a hater but it’s like when I see people walking the busy streets of NYC staring right into their phone. Appreciate the feedback though on Surefoot. Excellent video as usual! I was looking closely because I was at WC on November 16th.. which looks like it might have been the same day... hard to tell. They may have claimed to be 100% open, but that was a bit of a stretch. I say that because, once there is enough snow, they run a snowcat along the ridge line from knife ridge staircase to horseshoe bowl. You can just hop on the back of the cat. That makes it really easy to access a lot of steep terrain that is just gangbusters-excellent on powder days.

Better throw in my 0.02c. You needed a better boot fitter. I’ll bet you have limited forward ankle flex. When in your ski stance can you lift the front of your foot? You’re not getting pain in your new boot as the liners don’t fit it properly, so you can have a more upright stance. A heel wedge would probably have achieved the same result. Of course I could be wrong, but check your forward ankle flex and see. I’ll apologise if I’m wrong and you can yell at me and call me names.

I actually find that a little more comfortable! I couldn’t find a way to tie my hair where it wouldn’t get pulled down by something or make my neck uncomfortable. On wetter days, I’ll tie them though. I use a sturdier neck tube as a barrier between my face and my hair and it works pretty well!

Keystone early season is the best for sure - although I haven't made it to Wolf Creek yet. Whenever A-Basin opens first - it just feels like a technical win (one short, steep blue) - but then nothing else for 3 weeks. That's cute for the hype. Keystone is more legit with 2.5 miles of Schoolmarm / Silverspoon open. I will typically wait a week or so before going to Keystone as my fam still skies the easier greens and Schoolmarm is certainly on the blue side of green - so not ideal for novice skiers / families when Schoolmarm is the white ribbon of death. Thankfully, they typically open Endeavor within a week (Ranger lift) and Scout shortly after that. Both are great easier greens to learn / practice without the crowds at Keystone, but they are rather short runs - so lots of time on the Ranger lift. But, it's fine for early season for a novice skier - at least until Breck base 9 opens. BTW, I did my first blue run at Breck this week (Cashier) - and since I did not fall, I count it. My instructor said I was ready after doing short turns down "Little Harry's" (last hill down Red Rover). Honestly, I was a bit nervous but in retrospect, it was easier than Schoolmarm. I look forward to getting back to Breck to build up confidence on that run and start lapping it along with Bonanza. I'm also looking forward to getting back to Keystone and doing Schoolmarm again now that most of Durcum is open. I'm curious if I have a different opinion after a few lessons and more progression. I also need to make it back to Loveland and re-ski Zig-Zag. I had to walk about 1/3rd of it last season since it was a bit outside my comfort zone at the time. This weekend is Vail. I'm not sure about blues at Vail so I'll start with greens. But, since I've done a blue, I'm less concerned about harder greens now. I just need to get comfortable with going a bit faster. Also - I highly recommend doing lessons early season. So far, I've lucked into private or semi-private lessons both seasons by booking group lessons and no one else showing up at my ability level. Biggest groups are always first timers, but it falls off quickly after that. If I end up with a private lesson, I always tip super well. Regarding Carv, one of the instructors at Breck told me that a lady wore her Carv sensors during the lesson and she could see her improvement with data. It was an interesting story - I'm not sure if Carv is validated by the lesson or the other way around - but it was nice they were in agreement. LOL I've scored great deals early season at Vail, Breck and Keystone. For example, last weekend I stayed at Beaver Run Resort for $150/night - which is ski in/out on base of Peak 9. Same for the condos at Keystone, loft that sleep 6 for $175/night. Can't beat those prices - but starting second week in December, those great rates are a distant memory. My "ah ha" moment was "shin on tongue" - basically how important it is to keep your shins against your boot tongue (leaning forward) because it is so counter to natural instincts. That fixed my back seating issues. Once your center of gravity is over the boot, it is easier to tell your skis where to go. I know it is a beginner moment, but expert skiers often forget how hard it is to learn.

Hi Angelina, Great video, I enjoyed watching it! This past weekend, I drove from Aspen to my home in South Lake Tahoe. I just posted a narrated video of my trip on my channel, but my video doesn't focus very much on the leg you are interested in. The drive to Tahoe was very easy in clear weather. I took the HWY 50 route. If the weather was questionable, I definitely would advise taking the HWY 80 route, which I think would be manageable unless you are dealing with an extreme weather event.

@ Different topic: I can relate to your issues with boots. Years ago, I actually bought a liner and insole system from Surefoot in Vail Village. I was in the middle of a ski trip experiencing pain. That system totally did not work for me. It was a mistake going there on vacation because I couldn't easily get back. Presently, I live right down the street from from my favorite mogul run, which I typically can ski over 100 days in a year. There is no doubt that boots are my most important piece of equipment. I couldn't ski moguls almost every day without my boots being perfect. I wish I had great advice, but I only know what worked for me. I threw out the liner from Surefoot. I went to a local bootfitter. They "bumped out" a couple pressure points on my boot and made me a custom orthotic. The cost was $250 and totally worth it. I presently ski Lange Shadows in 115 flex. They work great for me. Good luck 🍀
