Just got a new one from Amazon. It had a white glob of grease on the lower screw and lower chamber threads. What actually is it? Is it safe?

Its for keeping the rubber band thingy lubricated. If you follow the instructions and discart the first couple of batches and then rinse with water & dry it will be removed.

sulla Brikka i commenti sono stati disabilitati, cioè a questa SpA manca l'etica della vergogna. Bialetti era piemontese, ma se inquadri il codice QR sulla confezione, ti linkano sul video in lingua inglese. In sito della Bialetti è in lingua anglosassone, e anziché mettere in vetrina caldaie e filtri, vanagloriano un cliché modereccio di una caffettiera vestita di Dolce&Gabbana, ossia la glorificazione della mediocrazia e dell'ignominia. Inoltre, la foto sulla confezione e sui vari store, è ingannevole e per definizione, la cremina sulla tazzina è una becera balla. In maniera conversativa, sulla Brikka, la cremina decantata è solo visibile quando emerge nella caffettiera, indi per cui, quando la versi, sparisce. Ma il trattato in laude continua: se segui le istruzioni per una dose da 4 tazze, ovvero riempendo il bicchierino fino a 180 ml come da istruzioni, quando fischia come un Intercity, il caffè, salendo, erutta come un Geyser fuoriuscendo dal coperchio, venendo spruzzato per aria poi ricadendo sul piano cottura imbrattandolo per bene. Quindi, il genio del piemontese Alfonso Bialetti, un imprenditore ed inventore che depositò una rivoluzione, viene svilito da una SpA che espone un abito griffato su una caldaia invetrinata su di un portale in un idioma alieno al territorio piemontese, Beh, più che omino coi baffi, direi un omino mattacchione.

Just inherited my late father's Bialetti after a trip to Florence reminded me to retrieve it from his attic. Does anyone know why you're not meant to press it down? I've been doing so and not had an issue with the final product

Our espresso machine died last week and I was using our french press and I just decided to be brave enough to try our moka... lets see how this turns out (I think I'm making enough for 3 people but idk if you can fill it half way, ours is huge)

Although I use Chemex coffee maker, moka pot is my favourite way of making coffee at a random airbnb. Usually there are moka pots sround like everywhere for some reason

Are you supposed to take it off the heat as soon as it gurgles? Or leave it on until it has finished extraction?

It depends. It works differently for different heat appliances. You need a steady low flow that doesnt splatter and to remove it in time so you dont get a burnt taste. For some ppl this means to remove at gurgling sound, for others to lower the heat to bare minimum and keep it on untill it stops. You' ll figure it out by trial & error.
