I grewup in San Angelo; I moved to Miles about 17 years ago. I love it out here, and I wanted my family out of the city; everyone is grown and doing their own thing. You are in garden zone 8; Follow Doug and Stacey; Stacey will teach you a lot on starting your homestead. Including making Gee and how to ferment and can your veggies, You will get fewer problems with a verticle garden with decease, bugs, less sun damage and water, you can make with cattle panels and t-post. There are thousands of videos on youtube to teach you all kinds of things. Good luck with your place.

New subscriber:) Great video and beautiful homestead! I love y’all homeschool we also homeschool. :) Fun fact- drawing a line along the ground with a stick or a finger, starting at the beak and extending straight outward in front of the chicken can hypnotize the chicken! So crazy I wonder what it is with a line?

Hello I just saw your video and liked and subscribed to your channel. I live in central Texas in the lost pines been in the woods for the last 40 years. I have been thinking about starting a KZbin channel myself. I have done a lot of gardening when I was younger and I think I was always late on planting. I didn't want that last late freeze to kill everything I had planted. I heard you say that your male cat had kittens and I about fell out of my chair but I just had a stray kitten come over and start eating with the other stray cats that I started feeding and I thought it was just being a pig and eating at two houses and then she didn't show up one night and the next night she showed up and I could tell that she had been nursing a few kittens and I thought she was to young to have kittens. Can't wait to see how your homestead is coming along.

Good luck on your journey. Couple pieces of advice - don't stat too many projects at once and don't make each project too big. That's how people get overwhelmed and give up. After 45 years of farming, gardening, and livestock, I'm now retired and enjoy watching you young-uns make o go of it. 🙂

Raise a Rooster from chick and he will be a sweetheart, but you need an aggressive one to protect your brood. You can train Rooster to respect you, but you have to let them know you are boss...You grab them by there legs and turn then upside-down until they faint and then lay them down..you might have to do it few times, but they should stay clear of you eventually..lol

I will have to try that. The one we have is a meany. Ty.

Roosters are good for learning how to process chicken. When you finish cutting it up, they make good dog food. Just put all the parts with the bones in a crock pot (or pressure cooker) with some water and cook until you can crush the bones with your fingers. Mush it up and put into freezer bags. Your dog will love it.

Use hay for bedding. Some push hemp "for deep litter bedding". The problem with that is it causes heat. Heat isn't good for chickens. Straw is hollow & mites can live in rhe straw.

My boyfriend and I were talking with my young niece playing by us. One of his roosters attacked my niece. I picked up the rooster by the neck, walked with him to the wood block and cut off his head. It was just automatic and reflex. I looked at my boyfriend and told him I would buy him a new rooster. He busted up laughing. His mom cooked the chicken for dinner that night. My boyfriend is now my husband. My niece and our children have never been attacked by a rooster again. 🤣 You might consider a herd guardian pup that you start out with the chickens so the pup bonds with them. The dogs will protect their chickens.

True so many homesteads even around the dallas fort worth area. I think the primary reason is us texan being practical people that like our privacy and a prepared lifestyle, the second being we dont get as much attention as people that live in really unique beautiful landscapes like parts of colorado/california/alaska and greener northern/easternstates. I spent alot of my childhood in west texas (abilene), its pretty ugly and brown for the majority of the year.

Wood shavings are a NO for deep litter. They absorb and hold the moisture. You want to switch to something like a bark mulch instead. Will be a night and day difference. Shavings saturate and clump together. If not changed out on a regular basis they turn almost to concrete. A 4 to 6 inch layer of dark mulch can last years without needing changing. Know that chickens tend to hang out in 1 spot in a coop. A low window will have them all craving right in front of the window. And low windows create unhealthy drafts that can give the chickens pneumonia. Current windows are fine. Use a hardware cloth in the 3/4 to 1 inch size over all openings. Weasels WILL get past chicken wire.

Been on a farm my whole life. Most important tip...you are not afraid of any animal. Infact, let an animal get agressive with you and they will get beaten unconscious. Now, both you and I know you can't take on a cow, but as long as you project that, then the cow will believe it. As a 6 year old I could walk among our herd of 60 beef cows and they would clear a path in front of me. Also, get goats before a cow. Goats are extremely friendly and easy to handle. They eat less, clear brush fields, and are far cheaper and easier to learn how to handle larger animals. If you are nervous around chickens you are not ready for a 800 lb animal that can force itself wherever it wants to go. I'm in NY, but almost everything is the same. Always have the fencing in place BEFORE you get the animals. Use good quality woven wire fencing. It will last a lifetime. Electric can be used inside the perimeter fencing, but never expect electric to stop a motivated critter.
