As scary as voicing an opinion is, what you talked about definitely needs to be heard! Personally, I think you did a great job in explaining your points :) I'm happy that adhd is being talked about more but, unfortunately, since it has become the "it new thing" now everyone wants to capitalize on it before a "new" disability comes into the limelight. It has happened before with other disabilities that have now been overshadowed by adhd mainly cuz (as much as it sucks to say this) adhd is seen as more "marketable". You can sell a bunch of random junk and call it "adhd fidget toys" meanwhile you can't really do the same as easily for most other disabilities. Thanks for sharing your thoughts!!
@KatieIbsen10 күн бұрын
You're so right - I have no problem with people talking about adhd and discovering that they have it, but the way that as more people become aware of it, the more chance there is to take advantage of us really bothers me!
@nony_mation11 күн бұрын
First of all, I love the cape ❤ Second, I don’t know if it’s necessarily internalized ableism, and here’s why: I personally think that a lot of things or programs or advice (especially from neurotypicals, but sometimes even from fellow NDs) try to get us people with ADHD to do things the way “normal” people do (by which I mean the way society expects things to be done). I have found for myself, I feel the most productive when I’m literally doing three things at once that I can rotate between when my attention shifts, basically indulging and taking advantage of the fact that my attention can and does shift so quickly (might not work for everyone, and doesn’t always work for me, but it can work) Related to scams and adhd-targeted marketing, I think that pre-diagnosis late-diagnosed (or self-diagnosed) adhd folks can be really suceptible to productivity-guru content, because we so badly want a system to fix the things we can sense aren’t working (maybe I should just speak for myself here lol, this definitely happened to me) and then it’s possible to spend a lot of money and time trying these systems built by neurotypical people for neurotypical people. These aren’t scams, and I don’t want to say or imply that they are, it’s just that adhd folks are so often searching for something to help and they/we believe the promises that “this system works.” I think it can be really important for ND people to hear that systems can and do (and should) change as schedules shift and life changes happen, which is really hard to remember when change is extra hard and we can be prone to black and white thinking. Anyways those are just my thoughts!
@KatieIbsen10 күн бұрын
You get it!! Thank you!! I am so here for the type of coaching or assistance or learning or therapy etc that helps us accept how our brains work and allow us to shape our lives to that rather than try to teach us how to make our adhd less... of an issue? so we can operate like 'normal' society. You're so right that we're (esp late diagnosed) more susceptible to targeted marketing because of how long we've gone feeling like we do have something about ourselves we should fix, which is what makes it all icky to me! And thank you about the cape, hehe, it's like wearing a blanket and its freaking cold where I live!

This is a lovely analysis! You made this a year ago and it's even MORE relevant today!! For people who feel attacked, all it takes is looking to see who in the vintage community is glorified vs overlooked. Look at age, religion, body size, aesthetic beauty, family, backgroung, skin AND skin tone, all at the minimum. If you're not part of the problem be part of the solution. As a black person that loves vintage clothing I've been seeing so much more inclusivity and division in the community. You can see the discomfort and anger on the faces of people who did not expect to see that style on someone black and fat. Luckily, I do what I want.
@KatieIbsen26 күн бұрын
Aah thank you for this comment! I'm really glad my analysis resonated with you! I agree that it's even more relevant today - I even considered changing the title of this video to include a comment about tradwives since that's what this video is really about lol. I am fully 100% here for you doing what you want - we need more people out here subverting expectations and shaking things up!!

After 60 decades, I like to visit my closet and say "hi" to my clothes. I can remember what I was doing when I wore... And one of the reasons I like new (to me) clothes is the anticipation of what we might do together. Ah, well that is also true of the clothes I already own when I consider wearing them again! Hi there! I am working on a video about this at the moment, but in the mean time, here are my top suggestions: 1. Work when it works for you - not when you think you should be working. Even if it looks different than other people! 2. Body double. Whether you work with someone in person or online (through Accepted Society), body doubling is really helpful for finding focus and motivation. 3. Use your tools. For me, my tools are my medication, my fidget toys, and my visual timer! 4. Make your study environment work for you. How can you 'hack' your environment to make it more appealing for studying? What can you add or take away from your environment to guide your attention towards what you need to be focusing on? 5. Study what you love! Studying something that I find meaningful has always been a huge motivator for me in school - because I love learning about it and I think it has important impact in the world, I am more willing to engage with the materials! I hope this helps for now!
