Damn, they did him dirty. So crazy because Marty seemed like such a nice guy. But he was a complete bastard during this.

Just to clarify, VFX staff are often hired for the project not freelance. Also a few days of crunch is relatively light, I once worked for 18 hours a day for about a month straight, and I've heard far worse.

How id and Bethesda, didnt think of giving Mick not only a well establish music creator that had worked on previous games, but one that did such a great job on the previous Doom, (seriously the 2016 Doom is great but without the music its not half as good) complete control I do not understand...

Fine review, friend. Hit on all the points I appreciated about this comeback for the franchise. I feel like there’s a lot of major franchises that tease the idea of “X but as a period piece,” - often times never leaving their own production hells but I think this film was one of the smartest ways to execute (heh) on that premise. Gonna go watch it again now!

Mick Gordon’s soundtrack and music is the heart and soul of Doom 2016 and Doom Eternal, simply phenomenal work. It’s a shame Bethesda and Mick had a falling out, I really hope Bethesda and Mick Gordon are able to bury the hatchet and reunite on Doom The Dark Ages, the game won’t be the same without Mick’s soundtrack.

he said she said situation to be honest. you side with who you feel is going against the system. obviously when this much money and personality is involved understanding who did what and why is impossible. when the main argument to why is simply Marty is a bad man… im not picking sides any more.
@nomindseye2 сағат бұрын
Sure, sure. Maybe read the sources before talking? Marty's initial (reddit post) argument is "mick is shit at his job and difficult person to work with", which is the first time anyone has ever said that about him in the industry. Mick's defense is long enough to qualify as a novella and comes up with receipts and emails. So do I believe an exec saying "he's shit" or do I believe freelancer showing me evidence?

When I listened to the Eternal OST for the first time I feel vindicated in my own initial reaction that "No way Mick actually wrote any of this" because of the huge jarring differences between the first and the second. And even Micks later work sounded better.

I wish Mick all the best and I hope he never has to tolerate abuse like this again. He so clearly cares deeply about making an incredible soundstrack for something he loves. It's sickening to see that drive and talent so callously exploited. I worry for whoever takes the mantle for the Dark Ages OST, and I hope they're able to defend themselves from predatory behavior like this. We want more great experiences from this new entry in the series, but no one deserves to suffer this much to make it happen.

Vetoing pieces of music for a video game "because it sounds too video game-y" has to have been one of stupidest statements I've heard, and it does show that not everyone involved in the newer Doom games actually got the appeal of the old ones. Mick Gordon did nothing wrong.

I took a dislike to Marty Stratton when I saw him on stage trying to 'spin' the extra lives addition to Doom Eternal as some kind of 'cool, retro feature'. It smacked of bullshit in the way he presented it. Then when I played Doom Eternal, I realised the extra lives were a cop out to compensate for being pinned in a corner by demons when going through a glory kill/chainsaw animation. Same with the blood punch. You come out of the animation to find yourself surrounded, and if your blood punch isn't charged, you can die before you can shoot your way out of it. They added extra lives so players wouldn't complain about being killed due to bad mechanics/design (far more common in the ultra nightmare mode where you only get one life). The guy just reeks of being a con artist. Put him in his own room with as much milk as he can drink, and an unlimited supply of crayons, and keep him away from any kind of design decisions.

The executive should be fired, the guy is some short of narcissist sociopath apparently that did unnecessary damage to the brand and the company. Jesus it was a sequel to a successful and award-winning game praised by it's soundtrack. Pay the guy well (I doubt that even in the upper level of composer compensation would make that much difference in a game the budget was probably dozens of millions and possibly 100+ million) and give him the best possible environment to do the best work. Either ask him to work when more design of the game is already finished so he doesn't have to make things that won't be used, or integrate him deeply on the creative process of the levels so he get the themes the designers are thinking. Then instead of a PR nightmare you have free advertising because of the music of your game.

Same, I bought it before knowing and now I regret it. We shouldn’t buy Doom: Dark Ages until Mick gets justice. We should openly make it known how we feel about it and make it known to Bethesda and Id software that this shit is not to be tolerated.

All these issues come down to time management. The time crunch is mainly coming from the publishers who want certain games at certain times to coincide with quarterly earnings. Since video games are now big business, this is what we have to live with. The actual artists and creative folks who have actual passion will be bled dry by the money folks

I could understand that working with someone as eccentric and perfectionist as Mick Gordon could be seen as complicated or even bothersome but trying to paint him as unprofessional is the biggest lie they tried to push in that situation. I think it speaks volumes that Mick tried to salvage the situation and deliver on a quality product even when faced with such hostility and him not publicly speaking out about it before gathering all the facts and exploring his legal options is the MOST professional way anyone could have handled such a situation.
@NoobsDeSroobsКүн бұрын
This is horrible, but makes a lot of sense as I felt that Doom Eternal was kinda meh. It felt so corporate and soulless. It felt like the only design direction was 'make it more awesomer and more bigger'. I did not think that the ingame music was shit, more the gameplay, level and puzzle design, but this story seems more like what I would expect.
