Pound for pound, the best bluesman to be found. Found and listened to my first Lightnin' record in a big senior citizen apartment complex library in Minneapolis, while working and spending a summer with Grandma, who lived there. It was a sample or promotional record, I believe for radio station distribution and on-air play. Among others, it had the dire song story called "Mr. Charlie" on it - an American history masterpiece.

He wasn't the first, he wasn't the best, but he was Lightnin' Hopkins and he was one of a kind. To this day in my top five blues artists easily, if not top three.

Obviously he is not forgotten at all by many music lovers of many kinds from many places. I assume the “all but forgotten” line was meant that he is relatively unknown to the general public and the mass media today compared to some musicians who have passed on. I have a hunch it won’t always be that way. Lightnin’ Hopkins’ music has deeply moved me since the first time I heard it many years ago.

We lived right behind the Shamrock on Dorrington Street as kids. We would sneak into the Olympic size pool during the warm months. Never could afford to stay in a room there.

Shadywilder, I do remember the Palace Club/Disco. It was @ the corner of Montrose and Hawthorne. It had two floors and was a mix of bohemian, hippies, cosmic cowboys, gays and regular people that liked to dance and party. It was kool then and no one bothered you and no crime. Fun days back then drinking margaritas on the roof and look at the Houston Skyline at night .
