Keep in mind, the A2 with burst was designed in the Cold War where you had to stockpile gear for massive amounts of troops - many of them conscripted through Selective Service and never proven in battle - to fight in multiple theaters. Since 99% of the military isn't using full-auto by doctrine at the rifleman role anyways, the burst feature makes sense - it's an emergency option only and it stops newbies from mag-dumping into oblivion like in Vietnam. For suppressive fire, you already had the M60 or M249 held by specialists at the squad level.

It is a good looking rifle. I prefer the full butt stock. The problem with any air cooled machinegun is the fire discipline required to not to overheat the barrel. Three round burst is the way to go.

3 round bust was an abomination. Thickening the barrel past the FSB was silly. Some of the A2 changes were very good, but not all.

The fact that Garand Thumb video on the M16A2 has 20 times more views is exactly what is wrong with "gun tubers". They are not there to give you any good information. They just feed you B.S. to get more views and sponsors.

Saudades!

I came upon a m578 at a crossroads in Vietnam. He was stuck in a mud hole with a thrown track and wanted me to pull it out with a 17 ton m543 wrecker. I said i can't do that its to heavy, but they wanted me to give it a try.Okay one time i said and hooked my chains up to it and gave it a pull which i couldn't budge it. Well my wrecker was making a weird sound from the engine so i put it in reverse to slacken the chains but it wanted to go forward. I put the wrecker in first gear and backed up to slacken the chains and killed the engine. What had happened was the engine kicked backwards and was running in reverse. I restarted the engine and everything seemed okay and i spent the night on the road in a small village. They did get it out by hooking up three APCs in a row pulling it out of the hole and the Cav went out to the patty dykes for a little security.

I highly disagree that a 3-round burst provides "ammo savings" and that it's better than a full-auto or 2-round burst. The 3rd shot is essentially wasted since it's so off target.

Good to see LtCol Lutz. I wanted to come work for you at the Development Center after I left the Scout-Sniper Instructor School but ended up going to a CQB section. We then developed the 36 yard/30 meter zeroing procedure to replace the 25 meter/1000 inch zeroing for the A2.

A masterpiece of design, production of this heavy machine gun. German scientists and inventors of not only weapons, but also internal combustion engines, rockets, aircraft like the Ho229 and in the fields of chemistry and medicine are world famous as brilliant scientists, top designers and advanced weapons manufacturers, until the moment of capitulation in 1945, when Germany ended up as occupied country. The USA/UK and CCCP used an occupation of Germany for their "hunt on German scientists" who were forced to produce advanced weapon systems for USA/UK and CCCP. France was there, also. All this was accompanied by the mainly France and British imposition of collective guilt on all post-war generations of Germans. And this collective brainwashing of Germans continues by British in every series on all History, National Geographic and other similar TV channels.

I love the A1 and the A2 and trained extensively with both as a 0311 in the USMC. One item of contention; the video says that going to the 1/7" RHT barrel and using M855 "green tip" Full Metal Jacket ball ammo is "more lethal" than the 1/12" RHT barrel using M193 Full Metal Jacket ball ammo. NOT True! The M193 ammo fired from an A1 tumbled and fragmented much easier because of the slower twist-rate leaving the bullet "less stable" and with more yaw. I guess "more lethal" could be construed as, the A2 w/its 1/7" RHT and with the heavier 62-grain bullet can extend its max-effective range out a bit further, but as far as tissue damage, watch the A1 vs. A2 comparisons with their designated cartridges into ballistic gelatin, and the wound channels and tumbling/fragmentation from the two weapons firing the two different cartridges.

old myth.......as long as the speed is over 2500 fps, both rounds will fragment....same.

@@chadhaire1711 ...Pull up some videos up comparing an A1 1/12" RHT barrel firing M193 compared to an A2 1/7" RHT barrel firing M855 into ballistic gelatin. The A1 is so destructive! Again, the 1/7" barrel stabilizes the bullet too much comprising the extent of the tissue/wound damage. No myth, there!

3x burs is not good - all guys say it literally decrease the abilities of the gun. the heavy barrel is also a big question - now more heat is handling by radiators. easy adjustable windage is a total mistake IMHO how many shooters loose zero on the rifle.
