I wonder if Petrucci sits down and goes through all the notes and music theory when it comes to write down these riffs or now it’s just that he plays what he heard in his brain. I am sure there is music theory involved here but I am just wondering how much time goes into it

He definitely knows the theory behind it. What winds up happening with these scales, progressions, and whatnot is that they become so ingrained that they aren't really thought about anymore. My best guess is that he comes up with these riffs more unconsciously, while having the knowledge of this sit in the back of his mind.

24:06 Are you sure about that? Because during the Mangini era they pulled that trick so many times to the point I ended up disliking it a bit. I like when the "2nd verse" structure is either slightly different to the first one, or when it is reused later on. For example, in "Behind the Veil" they use the 2nd verse as the outro. Btw, they mentioned this 2nd verse thing during an interview for "A view from the top of the world" --> kzbin.info/www/bejne/jXXPe6mdnNuNgbssi=vsOSPhuAa_nMgbtr&t=452

That‘s the most in-depth- analysis of a guitar song I‘ve ever seen ! Just wow ! Where most of the other teachers here just call out fret numbers and strings, you share your emotions which certain notes / chords create… and that‘s what music is all about, isn‘t it ?
