I couldn't make out everything on the phone call but what I have to say is, the kind of lifestyle Elvis began to live, is not for a person looking for a secure job, to raise kids and have a normal lifestyle with plans to put their kids thru college and expect to retire on. Elvis was the party, and when the party ends so does money. Music business is living on the edge, it's very unpredictable. It could be short run or long run. If drugs get involved with performer, it creates a whole host of problems. Elvis was very giving, he took care of all of his family, grandparents, cousins etc.. He showered so many with gifts, vehicles, jewelry, cash, houses. He'd purchase complete strangers vehicles. With how giving he was and the fact his health was starting to decline and he was taking massive amounts of his medication where it got to extent he'd bump into walls, fall on the floor, fall asleep while eating, were signs they needed to start looking for another job or get into a career. Fact he was so over giving and Vernon his father had an argument with him over it, was a sign future financial problems were on the horizon, it's time to start looking for another job. His step-brother Billy took it upon himself to start working a regular job. Elvis use to give him great advice and Billy listened. To be realistic, Elvis didn't need those guys and the amount of them around him 24/7, that was extreme co-dependency trait Elvis had and those guys didn't mind it cause they loved the party like life, the gifts, freebies, attention they got for being close friends with Elvis and power they felt guarding him, and of course the lifestyle at Graceland, and they knew they could get attention from women. Elvis was not great at money management nor business, it was apparen. There was total dysfunction and disorganization. He needed a regular strict routine to make sure he had adequate rest at night for his body/mind and voice, time put aside each day for quietness for his mental health, a regular regime of healthy foods, for the kind of schedules he held, recordings, rehearsels, interviews, traveling, etc... It was not Red, Sonny, Joe, David, Rick, etc... responsibility to get Elvis off drugs. If a addict doesn't want to quit, there isn't anything anyone can do. Putting up with it only enables them to keep using. It was not Elvis's job to be a people pleaser. They should had seen the writing on the wall long early on and began to think about their future. At least Jerry Schilling stayed in the home Elvis bought him years ago. I'd hope those guys were saving money while they worked for Elvis, it's the responsible and wise thing to do. Iresponsible people use money for the moment, for bills, necessities, and wants, not putting aside to save in case of emergenices, if they get laid off, if get sick, immoblized, in order to have enough money to cover expenses for a while until can devise a second plan. I understand it was different times then and they were young, and society wasn't as privy then to know the pro's and con's of celebrities lifestyle. There was just a few channels on t.v.. There just wasn't access to a lot of information during that era. So it made them naive and vulnerable but as time moved on seeing what was unfolding, they should had bailed out sooner then what they did. Anyone that wants to enter high end music business better be prepared to treat it serious and treat it like a business cause it's exactly what it is. If someone is an addict, or feel they could succumb to addictions or have mental fragilities, have ongoing battle with self esteem, just want to chase fame for reasons to be famous, my strongest advise, is stay far away from pursuing a career. Please do NOT do it. If they think it's bad before going in, it will get ten fold worse.

I think Elvis felt it was all his fault because his dad did him wrong firing them with a weeks pay when he wanted to give him a severance and possibly bring them back. What Red is doing here is disgusting.

----------- Red is nasty for recording a phone call without Elvis' permission. Says something about his character. He didn't get Elvis to say anything wrong. This call was nil.

I've heard where there is that much anger, there was that much love. I think Red, Sonny, and Dave wrote the book out of anger for sure, but it was the depth of the anger and hurt that motivated them since the love seemed to have shot down by Elvis. They really loved Elvis and tried to protect him from abusing medications. Elvis was addicted to the drugs, and as with any drug addict you can not save them. They have to want the help or forget it. I am an Elvis fan and I will always be. However, he was a human being with limitations that cost him his life. We should always remember he was just a man. R.I.P. Elvis.

Red was speaking with a broke, angered & scared heart to an old friend & a superhero he knew personally for decades. Elvis was bombed out of his mind... BUT like most "decent folk" when drunk/stoned, his conscience & heart spoke truth & not held back by caution & sobriety! Did Red do wrong spilling the beans & airing the dirty secrets that lived behind the gates of Graceland? YES! But as he told Elvis, he was hurt, scared & yes angry. I think Elvis knew & understood that. But Red DID FLATOUT LIE to Elvis about the books content when he told Elvis it was going to talk about the early days & the fun times. The books title, "Elvis: What really happened." proved that claim by Red was wrong! In the end, Red was scared, broke, unemployed, panicked (& yes still obviously still in disbelief as to why he & his wife weren`t included in Elvis' wedding several years prior). He took the $$$ & hoped for the best... I'm sure he was crushed & felt a little guilty when those news flashes came across the news that scorching hot day in Memphis August 16, 1977...

Elvis simply never grew up emotionally and would or could not take responsibility for his actions.... he was used to getting his way and surrounded himself with YES men.... Red and Sonny truly cared by trying to get through to him about his drug abuse and paid the price.... Elvis paid the ultimate price for denying his addiction... a sad tragic ending all around.....RIP to all of them!

Red West was a traitor and a parasite just like his cousin Sonny West. Red West and Fike Lamar hung around Elvis' house in Bad Nauheim doing absoluteky nithing while Ekvis was in the army. Then they spend 8 years on filmsets doing nothing while Elvis was making movies and trying to get them movieparts. They were not happy when Elvis started touring because it meant they had to do some work for the money Elvis paid them!

These guys worked and cared for Elvis and put up with all his BS And if you do the research you’ll find out about just how much they put up with. To be fired. I don’t blame them. Drugs are horrible and from the time Elvis came out of Military he used them. What we know about Elvis is the celebrity. They actually knew the man. R I P to all of them.

Elvis does not sound Drugged up. he sounds totally normal! it kind of disproves the book and shows that Elvis was not out of control like they said in the book. Elvis is very in control and is having a conversation with his friend and shows that he cares for Red and his family, Red however chose to record the conversation and I think he was going to use it against Elvis if the conversation went another way. Elvis would have never turned his back on Red or Sonny had he lived, he was a compassionate man. Dave had only worked for Elvis for 2 years and when he was fired he went to Elvis's house in California with a gun!!! I think Dave was an out of control nut and needed to be fired, he did a current interview and you can still see that he has an out of control temper about it even now.
@dhaley88475 ай бұрын
Elvis was a forgiving man, He was betrayed by these guys after they were let go. He was being sued because of these guys getting into a fight. It is normal for an employer to fire people that cause a lawsuit, it helps settle the lawsuit because there has to be shown in court hat you have taken action, these guys may have been hired back after the lawsuits were settled but they saw fit to stab Elvis in the back and write the book, The publisher chose to make up things and add to the stories that Red. Sonny and Dave had told them. Dave in a recent interview said that they didnt hardly use a single word in the book that they had told the publisher, most was written by the publishers people and it was all done to sell books not to tell the true story!

All these guys rode the coattails of his success and then got angry when they got fired, any company can fire anyone, they felt entitled and as family , and maybe they were, but it was a business. they claim to be bodyguards, i think they were just riding the high life roller coaster until it stopped producing,,, my opinion .... they should be happy that Elvis helped them and wasnt into money as much.....
