In 2024 SF City spent roughly $2 billion to homeless services. The Salesforce Tower, largest building in SF cost about $1.1 billion to finish. I'd wager there can be quite a bit of opulence in some areas. At 1.4mil sq ft of floor space and being generous at 725 sq ft x studio apt that would be 1931 units. Obviously that wouldnt work as they would need be near of a window but many could be larger than studios and for different reasons.at small end housing, permanently, nearly 2000 persons & if shelters placed near street level, potentially many more. This building could house a program that allows people to move higher up based on progress in programs or sobriety, education programs, job placement and training, so much. Also, a build of same/comparable could be used, experimentally for affordable housing but rather than subsidized simply, just this one, deregulated and units sold, essentially, as concrete boxes with nothing but minimal plumbing & power. The buyer having the freedom and ability to, with time, create their house in their own idea of standard & beauty. Much like lofts, people could be owners and designers. Id wager a great amount of ideas, art and innovation could be produced by this form of free human spirit.
