He sang it better than Kelly Price but not better than Sheerly Murdoc.

This is an overstatement! He did not sing this song better than Kelly Price. Not at all! He has no control nor tonality over his voice. It didn't sound mellow, as it should because, he was trying to sing out of his range and was straining his notes. He tried over sing the song and outperform Kelly Price rendition, and it didn't sound good. If he's trying to pursue a career as a singer, he's going to need a lot of lessons and training from vocal coach, to teach him how to sing professionally. Besides, he chose the wrong song to sing because, As We Lay was originally written in the key and pitch for a female vocalist, not a male.

@@slimdude2011 t’s abundantly obvious that you may not fully understand male vocal ranges or how they interact with song choice and style. Firstly, there are tenors who can sing in the soprano range in their natural voice or with a mixed/head voice technique, as you’ll find in singers like Philip Bailey or even male opera countertenors. Vocal range doesn’t restrict male vocalists from interpreting songs written for different genders, especially since R&B music is often about personal interpretation, feeling, and style rather than strict adherence to traditional pitch. Luther Vandross famously covered songs originally performed by female artists-tracks like "A House Is Not a Home" and "Superstar." These reinterpretations have become iconic, which showcases how singers can successfully reimagine songs across vocal registers and styles. Saying that a male singer “chose the wrong song” simply because it was written for a female voice doesn’t take into account how vocal flexibility allows talented singers to bridge gendered arrangements with their unique expression and technique. Quality, tonality, and control are subjective and largely based on listener preference, as many of the comments show a positive reaction to this singer’s interpretation. Just because you perceive a difference in tonality doesn’t mean the performance lacked control; tenors often use a lighter mix or head voice to access higher notes, which doesn’t constitute “straining.” Your comment seems rooted more in subjective taste than technical accuracy. Finally, while ongoing training is helpful for any vocalist, implying a lack of professionalism because of one interpretation is unfair and dismissive, especially when many listeners enjoyed the performance. Vocal interpretation in R&B allows room for emotional delivery and personal style, which doesn’t always adhere to traditional or “mellow” standards. Your perspective might benefit from a broader understanding of how vocalists can work across gendered song choices, varying vocal tones, and interpretative freedom.
