Every time I watch this, I can't help thinking that even though Lauara Benanti's the bigger star, Leigh Ann Larkin does the better job here. Not only does she look like the real June Havoc, she's got some of her expressions and even her vocal mannerisms in here. If you've ever heard June Havoc on the Mexican Hayride album or seen pictures of her performing, you should be able to see what I mean. Larkin really does seem like she could be a young June Havoc. Maybe Benanti showed more of the real Gypsy Rose Lee in the later scenes, but Larkin is more like the real June here.

What a fool I have been to wonder If he might have a care for me How insane the thought that you Could be to him dear in any way That a more absurd young girl has lived I doubt that you could say! You, a favorite of Mr. Rochester? Gifted with the power? Your logic's fading by the hour And to no avail, Jane! Poor, blind puppy! Had to go on dreaming Had to try to give your life some meaning Still you fail, Jane! How dare you think there's a place In his heart for you? I'm painting my portrait An absolute likeness Faithful to illustrate Every fine line I'm mastering detail Highlighting defects Making a permanent mirror to see All of the faults that lie hidden in me I'm painting my portrait It's plain and uneven Reminding me what I am What I must be I'm leaving out nothing No matter how painful All of my flaws on display to be seen Now my painting is done I'll start another This one of her And when I close my eyes I clearly see her face Capture her grace and poise Fight back the tears and I'm Painting her portrait An absolute likeness The loveliest face The most delicate skin A tribute to beauty The perfect Miss Ingram Omit neither diamond ring Nor golden rose Make her a lady of rank Glistening satin Oh, how she glows Mix in your finest tints Paint her dramatically With all your sweetest hues Sit here fanatically Painting our portraits This one will live All of her life as a governess Just a lonely governess This one will always be happy And marry a man who will carry her away And should you fancy That he really loves you Just compare the pictures Two completely different mixtures You should be ashamed, Jane Why would he trade his silver For some unpolished metal? Why would he settle for a slave When he could have a queen? Jane, it's foreseen, Jane! Don't even dare anymore To compare Say a prayer For your sorry soul Jane!

I saw Sound of Music in Painters Mill Music Fair in Baltimore County when I was a child, theater in the round. And I am pretty sure Maria was played by June Havoc! I wonder how I'd find out. That was a thrill, to see live musical theater. Now Painters Mill Music Fair is a service center for Toyota!

Sierra has the most stunning soprano voice I have ever heard. I love how she sings not only so effortlessly but so soulfully too. It is just one of the many things that draw me to her. She is my all-time favorite Christine, and watching this has made me miss her more in the role.

The more I listen The more I'm mesmerized She's one of the few who can really use her voice like an instrument musically while AT THE SAME TIME giving emphasis where the lyrics need it. It needs to be FULLY SUNG but also punched in all the right places rhythmically, as Steve would want it and yes I can understand EVERY WORD

A friend of mine once said amateurs should never do "Gypsy" if only because of this number: most non-professional orchestras co not have the skill to play the tricky and beautiful dance break music to save their lives, and if you don't have an absolutely first-rate Dainty June--who can convince you she's enormously gifted despite the awfulness of the act--then not much is really at stake in her mother's later decision. What I love about this is that not only is Leigh Ann Larkin a genuine musical star, but she's hilarious.( the funniest dainty June ever)

Correct. and too many amateur companies try and do the Robbins choreography. with not that great results. I was in the original Australian production which was a reproduction of the Lansbury production, and this was one of my dream numbers. It pushes Rose's choreographic abilities and the style of the day so perfectly. I always loved doing the Robbins choreography, reproduced and adapted here by the legendary Betty Pounder. My disappointment in this version is that the boys don't have that quick change which also adds to the fun and theatricality of the number. I also feel the dropping of canes TWICE is pushing things too far. Tulsa loosing his hat is enough. Dropping two canes just spoils that touch.

JANE (ROCHESTER) What can I do now, my precious Lord? His dark love would be my best reward I know I should not dare to go Deeper in his madness But it's like a field I must run through No one's words will make me love him less How much can I stand, I dare not guess The secret voice that speaks to me Tells me he's in danger Looking to the dust for tenderness Deep in my secret soul I stand alone The purpose of why I'm here Is still unknown And I can't help but sense The darkness in his mind But I keep looking for his goodness Afraid of what I'll find My heart moves through his unquiet sea I pray a wave will come and carry me Closer to his troubled tide Waters of his fury But how can I swim this great divide? Deep in my secret soul (Her spring of life) I cry his tears (Draws me near) I weather his angry voice (Her gentle voice) I feel his fears (I hold dear) His life has infected every wound (Her life has infected every wound) And every pore (And every pore) I feel his mystery possess me (I feel her mystery possess me) And I pray that mercy's hand (And I pray that mercy's hand) Will bless me (Will bless me) Deep in his secret soul (Deep in my secret soul) His past is cursed (I stand alone) I summon my deepest will To still his thirst (I will not atone) God give me the strength to go (And I will not) The journey I take must first begin (ever let her) (Deep within) Deep within my secret soul (my secret soul)
