Connors was a machine. Between (and including) '74 and '85, he missed the semifinals of major tournaments only FIVE times! He only played the Australian twice (won once, second the other time), and didn't play the French the first 5 of those years. But when he went, he started in the semis! Oh, and of those 5 times where he was off and didn't make the semis? 4 of those times, he lost in the quarters. Connors was probably the best pure tennis player in history. Take power and conditioning out of the sport, and I'd take Jimmy over anyone that ever played. Not saying he was out of shape, but he was in shape to play tennis. Plus, his competitiveness kept him out there at times more so than his fitness. Had he been in the shape that Lendl was in, with that kind of power (forget Roddick, etc.; we're not getting crazy here), I doubt he would have been beatable during the '80s. I played with a T2000 racket for a (short) time. Put that thing in the hands of a pro player since the '90s and we'll see how good they are.

@rafamericano. Enjoy your certifiable delusion! The 2008 Federer vs. Nadal Wimbledon Men's Singles Final is the most grossly overrated men's tennis match in history!!!! Every point was a baseline "war-of-attrition" slugfest guaranteed to be a truly wonderful cure for insomnia!! There was not one single classic, all-time memorable point during that exceedingly, tediously, overly long, sleep-inducing contest! Only unthinking so-called "tennis fans" find serve-and-volley boring to watch! At least serve-and-volleyers don't drag out points unnecessarily long! Tennis needs a diversity of playing styles in order to be a truly compelling spectacle to watch!!! All baseline play with neither player going to the net except to shake hands at the end of a match is equally as dull as cardboard as tennis that is all serve-and-volley play! Truly knowledgeable - and the word knowledgeable cannot be emphasized too strongly - tennis fans recognize that fact!
Nobody beats Gael Monfils 20 times in a row! Djokovic: Hold my beer!

Interesting how finesse is the way the game was played back then. Now it's nothing but how hard you can hit it. I'll take the old days. More enjoyable to watch.

Am I right in thinking that Lendl's topspin backhand kind of truncates the stroke? . That is, he doesn't bring the stroke to the extend of the stroke, like, say, Wawrinka or Thiem or Dimitrov. Is that an accurate description?

When McEnroe blew the French Open to Lendl earlier this year, it took some the wind out of his sails, except here.

@tdane5017. An interesting thing about McEnroe's career is that had he gotten himself into excellent physical fitness condition in 1977/1978 and not played any doubles matches at all, I don't think there is any question that not only would he have defeated Borg in their classic 1980 Wimbledon final, but would also have won at least 11 major singles titles instead of the 7 major singles titles that he won! I realize, of course, that McEnroe used doubles to keep his volley sharp and to avoid off-court physical fitness training, but the sad reality is that all of those extra hours that he spent on the tennis courts at the 4 majors playing doubles wore him down for his singles matches in the later rounds of the major tournaments. His dominance in singles play would have definitely lasted longer if he had been in great physical fitness condition from the start of his pro career and not wasted his energy playing doubles!
