Looks great! What did you use as bedding for those porcelain slabs? It looks like you both 'back-buttered' each piece of porcelain but also mixed some mortar or binding product into the bedding layer?
@iamahardscaper
@iamahardscaper 2 күн бұрын
Yes, it is called Trass. It is a cement compound that gets mixed with HPB and installed around the border. The porcelain is back buttered using an elutriant and then placed on top of the Trass. Everything in the interior is placed directly on HPB but back buttered with type S mortar. The trass becomes rock solid with some flex and remains permeable. It becomes the edge restraint for this system. Here is a full video install: kzbin.info/www/bejne/gICxaalnaq93ndE

So you don’t run a tamper with plywood over slabs? Do you have to account for any settlement in the loose 1” bedding layer? Thanks!
@iamahardscaper
@iamahardscaper 4 күн бұрын
No, a roller compactor is best for slabs especially if they are just 1" thick. kzbin.info/www/bejne/eXyUh3mCYpKtb80 Sand will settle up to 1/4" for every 1" of depth. HPB will settle less than 1/8" for every 1" of depth.
@dsmart003
@dsmart003 4 күн бұрын
I tried a raised patio at my house to get used to switching to hpb and it ended up settling 1/2” with a 5000lb tamper for some reason, and my base was very thoroughly compacted before the 2” bedding layer they called for. I really need to get used to it because it did not screed very flat at all and like I said compacted way more than the paver manufacturers said.
@iamahardscaper
@iamahardscaper 4 күн бұрын
hmm that is interesting. At 2" it should not settle more than about 1/4".

What about mix of sand and cement that you'd water to harden ? Sounds like a cheap option close to polymeric and maybe even a tad more permeable? Love the quality of your vids and all the insights into technical stuff. Even though you may not be a huge proponent of this, it would be nice if you tackled driveway-oriented base prep and bedding, such as pavers laid on mortar or concrete to prevent the pavers from sinking and shifting under the weight of vehicles. I'm thinking of a steep driveway down to a garage where I'm pretty sure traditional sand and chip stone wouldn't work, for the agreggate would shift or get washed away by the rain
@iamahardscaper
@iamahardscaper 4 күн бұрын
I personally wouldn't do that, but I especially would not do that in a climate with freeze-thaw. The benefit to polymeric sand is that it is flexible so it will move with the pavement. Cement with sand as you suggest would crack easily with movement. Also if you put salt down in the winter it will destroy it very quickly. Yes, I'd love to do more content on concrete bases especially for driveways. Unfortunately it is not an installation method we do as you mentioned and we rarely do driveways as well. You could install an open graded base and use DriveGrid or Triaxial Geogrid to stabilize the base. You would just want to install a paver with a wide joint for the bedding material.

Hey loving your channel... i recently ripped up some fake turf that had crusher dust underneath. Stupidly I thought it was black sand or something and proceeded to reuse it under bedding for pavers so I didn't have to haul it from the site etc. I have pretty much laid all pavers now but not locked them in as yet. Would it be worth taking them up and relaying a more appropriate bedding material?

Another thing to add is, based on my research on this topic dense graded base’s can support I heavier load. I’m building a patio that’s going to have a hot tub on top of it which is very very heavy so I opted for a dense grated base, even though it would have worse drainage. To compensate for that I am sealing my pavers and putting a French drain on the low side. What are your thoughts?
@iamahardscaper
@iamahardscaper 14 күн бұрын
In our application, id say the main one people in the industry discuss is a heavy variable load. Tractor trailers over an open graded base. Though there are examples of open graded base in these applications and they continue to test in these applications. We’ve prepared open graded for hot tubs, but we always pour a concrete slab for the hot to sit on as well and stabilize the base with geogrid.

I’m up north with freeze and thaw so I’ve been using open grade basses to avoid the issues found with granular A however I still use a polymeric sand for joints, less water in the base the better however any water that goes in from the sides will drain and won’t cause the pavers to move over time with below 0 temperatures and moisture in the bass.

Any experience with porcelain pavers over sand bedding layer for a patio? Paver company lists this as an option, but our installer is pushing us to pour a concrete pad and mortar them down.
@iamahardscaper
@iamahardscaper 19 күн бұрын
Not over sand. I would personally not install on sand, though I do believe some manufacturers do include it in their specifications for installation as an option. Concrete is totally fine, I just do not like mortar joints in a freeze-thaw climate. And you are relying on a contractor that is good at both pouring concrete properly and able to install porcelain.

@@iamahardscaper One of my concerns as well - lots of freeze-thaw here in Missouri. I will probably talk to them about aggregate!
@andrewbjornsen4132
@andrewbjornsen4132 19 күн бұрын
If the subsoil is about an 1" lower than I needed - do you think I would be able to use some aggregate with fines to to raise the base layer to where I need it? Options in my area are 3/4 minus or 1/4-1/2 minus. I'm going to extend my small concrete patio and the surrounding subsoil (heavy clay) is an inch lower than I would need for the HPB, panels, and pavers to reach the height of the concrete. This patio will be against my foundation and due to the heavy (non-permeable) clay - I'm thinking the wise move would be to make sure the base layer would be less permeable and be able to better direct water away from the foundation. Does this sound logical to you?
@iamahardscaper

Thanks for the informative videos, My contractor did not do this step during this sanding part of my installation . This I believe has contributed to the unevenness of my patio . Should I try to pressure wash the sand down into the gaps before compacting and re-sanding ,also should I do this now after the current rain or wait till summer when things are dryer ? The job was done two months ago. Thanks.
@iamahardscaper
@iamahardscaper 20 күн бұрын
Major unevenness could be from the install of the pavers. This step will take out minor imperfections, but should not be relied on to level out pavers completely. There is a +/- 1/16" forgiveness between one paver to the next. If you were to replace the sand and re-install, You would want to pressure wash the sand out and not down into the joint. Then wait for the joints to be completely dry and then install the new sand. You would want to wait for dryer weather.
