My union is going to hold a vote on setting up a merit system in a month. A representative was going around trying to explain it to us today but didn't do a good job of explaining it or it's pros and cons. Ty for this video. This was far more informative.

Lol you're admitted based on academic qualifications? Maybe it's different for the humanities, but at least in STEM fields the interviews are VERY similar to a lot of industry jobs. At Google for data science jobs they ask you calculus questions lol. It's not some magical fine line. They *interview* you they expect prior research work experience, often in lab tech positions that are paid and considered employees. As a graduate student you are usually "above" these "genuine employees" in terms of heiarchy. It's also interesting because I think there are more benefits to students in the humanities, but the arguments against unionization sound even more silly when you realize how they don't even apply to all grad students. Like taking classes? Not really a thing. You literally do all the things that techs, postdocs, and other "real" employees are doing and you do an equal portion, often with more experience than some of the "employees." Also if it's about training...the NIH considers postdocs trainees, but they can unionize...so where is the distinction? Most PhDs in STEM also don't even go into academia (in part because how horribly they are usually treated/overworked) and when they do many don't even teach. So, again...the arguments against just sound stupid. It's also worth noting PhD length is highly variable by field. In my field, many programs do not allow a 4 year PhD at all. 5 is the bare minimum, typical lengths are about 6.5 years, with 7 and even 8 not being uncommon.

I hope Dominic doesn't mind my strong language, but what a load of horsecrap are these "against" arguments, aren't they? Virtually any highly-qualified job involves a ton of on-the-job training, and yes, exactly, many (esp. STEM) PhD students go into research firms, for which tasks like teaching undergraduates can scarcely be called "training." Academic performance is also considered a major qualifier for most jobs (this is its intended purpose. Why did that one dissenter on the board go to college, assuming that he did?). And then, what does the University actually provide to the Graduate Students? Yes, you learn a lot, but, in my experience, you mostly teach yourself. While doing tasks that get the University better stats, status, and money.

This is the best content i could find about this topic. Are you considering putting any more quantitative methodology videos up?

Thank you for the complement! At this time I have no plans today of uploading other videos on quantitative methodology. Although I use it in my research, I haven’t used it in the classroom in a while, so my focus has been on other things. Thanks for watching!

That's not how it works. As a freshman in high school, I can assure you that these memes are fucking awful. They're not memes. I don't understand why fucking troglodytes like you think that plastering what you want out of students in instant font will be beneficial. Look up r/deepfriedmemes to see what good memes look like. Millenials don't find cringeworthy Facebook memes comedic in any way.
@Lyreoz6 жыл бұрын
I do have to give you credit for making a somewhat fun and creative assignment for your students though. I feel like your argument of memes being beneficial is somewhat negated when your memes are garbage.
