How Salazar kept Portugal out of WWII and kept the Portuguese global empire until the end of the 20th century, its a miracle!

And that's why Portugal was the greatest economy of Europe between 193 and 1975 (lol) and everybody was so happy and free despite some saying that child mortality and literacy levels were one of the lowest. Ah good times when we could snitch on a neighbour and see him arrested.

I'm not sure if this has already been commented but there is a history of portugal podcast hosted by a gentleman named Robert Mendes! He's fairly good at narrating and has a clear speaking voice. The audio is quite solid too. My only personal criticism is I wish the episodes were a bit longer with deeper dives into different events and such. That being said it's possible he doesn't do this due to his personal life or Mayne trying to keep things a bit more streamlined in an attempt to capture a wider audience. Either way, check him out! 😊

I'm a 52 year old son of the Carnation Revolution, Socialist at heart and Democratic in Body and Soul. Nowadays portugueses like to pitch Portugal as a Great Country but we all know that is very linear. We had our moments, but being in the outskirts of European power carry a price. Saying that, I wish to thank the author because I ve learned quite a bit of History of my own Motherland. Thank you very much.

I suppose if one were to turn on one specific American "news" channel, it might appear as if antifascists attack literally everyone. In reality, antifascists attack fascists and agents of fascism, sometimes violently, counter to your hyperbolic assertion (yes, even fascists can waive American flags).

Fantastic video. I've been interested in Portuguese history for decades. Anyone who seriously studies history must study the gargantuan impact of Portugal on world history. They were a major world power for hundreds of years.

This is a very good video except you fail to mention Portugal vast humanitarian aid Poor Portugal gave to Finland during the finish soviet war of 1939. Equally Portugal also assisted many international Jewish groups (Office of the Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society and the red cross aid distribution) in Paris be immediately moved to Lisbon when France fell in 1940 . thereby further saving many additional Jewish and other Europeans refugees. Not to mention his direct involvement in Hungarian ambassador saving additional aid to refugees in Hungary in 1944. all the direct orders of Salazar

Thank you so much for the quality comment and additional information on Salazar. So many people especially those in the US have only negative if any knowledge of Salazar. @@greenteawithdman3779 Truth is i have been studing Portugal and particularly Salazar since 1982. So there is not much i dont know about the subject both as historian and economist and someone with brief poltical experience i know how hard it is to build from zero and have to explain to a skeptical public. Truth is Salazar is perhaps the greatest Portuguese prime ministers. And his legacy will last as long as Don Afonso , prince Henry the navigator sebastion and Marques de Pombal. Even his deepest critics can only admit the greatness of his personal character and is spotless government ability. I can only be critical of his funding of military during the 1960s as he clearly should have released he was fighting the entire communist world along with many western states. Including JFK. FACT Portugal was there 14 yrs of war was testement to portugal bond in Africa

@@mz2535 defence of overseas provinces is the same as defence of homeland. there was no resources in cabo verde to mismanage. cabo verde was uninhibited when found and settle by Portugal. yes majority later where Africans brought there by Portugal . but that does not make the resources theirs. and fact that the Pm of Portugal acknowledged Cv in 1975 was nothing but a disgrace. if Portugal was everything that people say. then it would have empty cv and stp and placed 1m retournados there which it could have done anytime in 1950/1960s1970s and moved african out. we never did that, cause Portugal does not end at coast of Portugal. and cabo verde is historically part of Portugal as Madeira and Azores is. in fact a large percentage of cv lives in Lisbon and Portugal and continues to serve in Portugal arm forces. Portugal is not an empire ... its a cultural, historical , link that binds the 59 points around the world trades and presented by from Brasil to macao and japan ( for 120 years). and these ties exist to in CV and they are still best of partners brother nations and both strong democracies. something i am proud of ans so is Portugal and the CV brothers.
@hernanifarias53562 жыл бұрын
You misread my reply. The people that wanted independence whete 100% fund by communists fro. Guniea bissau .not cv. Local governors can make mistakes but that is not issues. Cv had development and grew in 1940 1950 1960s. So your information is incorect. My com.ent about retiurnados was simple. Portugal discovered cv empty. If they wanted they could have filled it with portuguese from portugal not africa. That was my pojint. The real issue ia today both are stable democracies not like guneia bissau or others
@hernanifarias53562 жыл бұрын
In 1960s cv and gb where considered one as overseas movement they split in 1975. And formally in 1979. So cv was authoritaive also for sevral years than made democracy. Not before

I am Portuguese and have spent 45 years of my life studying the economic political history of Portugal and Salazar in particular. the part 1 is well established and show a clear understanding of the situation Salazar inherited and how ingrained and underdeveloped Portugal was. well done. my only criticism for part 1 is the lack of video images and the misuse of the azulerios ( blue print on white tile) showing the conquest of Ceuta for the devastation off November 1 1755. i hope part 2 is as detailed and informative.

Just a tip when talking about the UK paper “The Times” it’s best to say “The Times of London” when you want to refer to its location, as that’s the papers full name. It sounds clunky any other way :)
