He's obviously never heard of candle pin. A candle pin bowling ball is much smaller and has no finger holes. A friend of mine's dad owned and operated a bowling alley. We'd go bowling all the time. I'd see them cleaning the balls every day, and this was back in the 70s and 80s.

Pinsetter mechanic here, we absolutely clean the finger holes for every house ball twice a week. Most alleys do this just in case, as sometimes the balls may have a chance of cutting your finger, and we would want the chance of infection to be as low as possible.
