The tank started out as a large concrete ring that was lowered by controlled excavation, step by step using the forces of gravity and its own weight until the whole structure was underground. The tank walls were built in three stages as an excavator worked systematically to remove earth from inside the tank. Once each wall section had gone down four metres (over a two week period) the next concrete wall layer was poured on top and the process repeated until all three sections were set and sunk. There were other ways the tank was engineered to ensure it sank in a uniform fashion. One was the ‘cutting shoe’ which was built for the bottom of the tank wall and helped it slice down into the earth. The outside of the walls were also lubricated to help reduce friction between the tank and the surrounding ground.
