I was Shocked to get to spend my 24th Birthday with Sleepy in a little Club in New Orleans…Met him All of a Sudden at the door of the club when He Walked in…Somebody said it was my Birthday…and Sleepy Very kindly shook my hand… and asked me…He said,”Son what would You like for me to Play for You tonight”…Out of my mouth came,”Lost Highway by Hank” and I’ll be dog gone as the evenin’ went on He kept mentioning that it was my birthday…Gals came round me and Hugged me…Bought me drinks and asked for cigarettes…Then at The end of the Night Sleepy said,”Happy Birthday Kristofer…This is for you…and He Played,”Lost Highway”. A Biggg Tremendous Guy…With a Bigger Heart.

I don't like this live performance, it's a bit too fast-paced. That's often the case with live performances. Also the audio quality is bad... some distortion. But this song (lyrics) is a masterpiece.

Surely a wonderful tribute to Dickey Betts, what a real star in his own right. A stellar group of players too, especially cool to see (and hear) Jimmy Hall.

Despite the many accolades and praise DB receives, he still seems terribly underrated to me. What an extraordinary talent - a truly gifted writer, singer, and instrumentalist. Such fluidity in all he did. A huge loss.

Jimmy Hall was front-man for “Wet Willie,” a great Southern rock band from Mobile, Alabama. One of their big hits was “Keep on Smilin” which goes all the way back the early 1970s. He can still sing ! Check out his current-day collaboration with BlackBerry Smoke - still sounds great. And also…RIP Dickey Betts, thanks for all the great music. He was one of a kind. Never be another like him.

I would bet the guy sweating this gig the most was Sheehan. I talked with one of his friends and admirers years ago, a guy that toured on bass with Maynard Ferguson. When the subject came up he mentioned how good Sheehan was, especially his work with Talas. And i said yeah, but what would happen if he had to step on stage with Maynard Ferguson? He replied, its not his style. Well, this video is evidence of that. Dont mean to take anything away from Sheehans well documented right hand, speed, and successful career

I recall that Sleepy LaBeef had a great success in Spain. The Rockabilly revival of the early 80s swept across Europe, and Spain wasn't immune. The British band Stray were big, fueling the flames for this retro sound. I was in my early 20s then, and that's when Sleepy LaBeef emerged seemingly out of nowhere. Tours were organized, and I had the chance to see him live at the grand Teatro Principal in Valencia. There we were, a good 1,200 strong, dancing like fools to this man who could have been our father! But age didn't matter. He was the real deal: pure Rockabilly energy. Then came an even more unexpected experience. Sleepy played a tiny club in a small town called Aielo de Malferit. It was an unconventional setting reminiscent of stumbling upon a flamenco performance in the heart of South Dakota. We were a ridiculously intimate crowd - maybe 30 or 40 people - and Sleepy and his band were practically right there with us. It was electric. He had us dancing like there was no tomorrow, creating a memory I'll forever cherish. Thank you, Sleepy, for those incredible moments. You embodied the true power of music: to transcend cultural divides and unite us all. Rest in peace.
