My thoughts on this is "There are situations where you want to know how many meters per second something is going, and others where you want to know how many kilometers per hour something is going". A big part of my playstyle is using the 1.852 value to roughly estimate when a target on the map has traveled a certain distance in kilometers. I think it'd be very inefficient to use a value that converts knots into meters per second for such a big movement. I can definitely think of situations where the m/s conversion from the 1.944 value could come in handy. Perhaps you want to know how many seconds it'll take before a target has come within a certain distance from you. Or perhaps you want to know how many seconds it'll take for a torpedo to strike a target. With the latter example, you can probably set up some crazy shots. For example: If we assume our gyroangle is perfect for 2 targets, but the 1st target is 600m away from us and the 2nd one is 900m away from us, you can use the 1.944 value to set up a synchronized shot where you preemptively calculate how many seconds it'd take for each torpedo to strike their target and then get the difference. Then you use that difference to synchronize the time of impact for each solution. So if, for the sake of argument, the difference between the two is 10 seconds, you would fire at the furthest target first, wait 10 seconds, then fire at the closest target. If everything is correct, the torpedoes should strike their targets at precisely the same time. That would be excruciatingly more difficult if not for the 1.944 value coming into play. So in my eyes, one isn't better than the other, they're just tools that you can use to solve different problems. They each have their role to play and it's up to the skipper to choose how to use them in their playstyle.

@@SH3Bstanko6 Alas it couldn't save me from torpedo failures! Large tanker in heavy seas, opted for magnetic pistol due to the poor conditions. One exploded early and the other ran too deep and passed underneath the target harmlessly. My last two eels. Oh well! Curse those early torpedo designs :(.

In a way my favourite scene was the most hurt wrenching one. When all the chaos happens upon return to port, crew dying and all, the captain is locked onto the boat. He mortally injured but it’s like he only truly lets himself give up when he sees that thing fall beneath the water for the final time, after all they’ve been through together and the fact it was an extension of himself. When the boat died he died. The captain went down with his ship if you will. We the viewers see this through the pov of the pov character, and he even seems taken aback watching the captain end in this way. Such a powerful scene.

I’ll add as an Englishman it really hits hard as it’s our boys that do this air raid, devastate the crew we’ve come to love after following them on this incredible journey of survival that nearly ended multiple times just to end this way. It’s powerful. Really put things into perspective for me watching this as a boy.

That is pretty slick. I have played the vanilla SH3 for a lot of years and I can honestly say I am one that does not to this day know how to use any equipment properly. I just opened tubes and let'r rip tater chip! I have recently decided after almost 20 years that I wanted to get more into it and actually learn. I am now using GWX the last couple days and WOW! It is a whole new world. THis here piece of equipment is pretty slick. I like the ease of use. Quick, easy explanation. Thanks! On a side note, I am struggling horribly bad to identify ships. I see so many folks on YT open one of the many many books available and know exactly where to go and what they are looking for. DO you happen to know where a guy can go to find info on identification strategies for GWX and all them books it has? Thanks for your time and hope all is well your way. Take care!

Count funnels, number of masts then placement of bridge. By that time you either have the ship ID, or one very close to it in shape and size. In time you'll start recognising the ship types by eye and only flipping through the book to confirm your ID.

Man I really do understand the historic value of leaving the written language in the Uboat on the panels and such but ... I don't read or speak German/Deutsch (my apologies in advance for not being sure which one it is). I really wish I could get my panels to have English tags on them like yours do. I use the GWX Onealex mod and my panels are really unreadable to me. I pretty much know what is what but I really wish I could read them. I am new to that mod so hopefully someone comes along soon and says hey man, you can actually change that. it would make my dang day! Awesome video as well. It is good to see you again! 1.94 is not working good in SH3 (I always miss from long distance) but it works in Wolfpack for me even from long distance like 3-4.5 km. I don't know why. So when I play SH3 I use your calculation methods.

So my boats orientation relative to the target doesn't matter. I put it in my crosshair, calculate distance, aob and speed. Then I put it into the TDC and lock it. Assuming nothing changes, if I keep the crosshair on the target as the target moves ,the TDC then at all times feed the gyro angle to the torpedo and I have but to take the shot?

technically yes... but the game has put in errors for the uboats at the time. So if the target is behind you... and you shoot a forward torp... it can circle and hit you, or miss completely.

Still I feel it's a bit strange. You use relative bearing and distance (relative the uboat) to plot the targets heading in absolute terms . But what is it used for? You never have to input the bearing in the TDC, dial for bearing in the TDC is also relative.

Big mistake!!!! It should be multiplied by 1.944, not 1.852. Why?. Very easy, we multiply by 3.6 to transform m/sec into Km/sec, and we divide by 1.852, to convert it to knots, which are miles / hour. 3.6 / 1,852 = 1.9438

I'm very late to the party and I'm very much a odd ball here. I first fell in love with submarines when I was exposed to DSV Deep submersion's vehicle that was a TV series in the 90s. I don't have a favourite new boat so I'm actually not familiar with them. I play you most and I think I'll play other submarine games. Hard core mods ...

Port and Starboard....omg....Starboard is the side that used have the STEERING BOARD (before rudders)----and because of the Steering board being on the right, when you docked in port YOU DOCKED THE OPPOSITE SIDE, THE LEFT, (THE SIDE WITHOUT THE STEERING BOARD) TO THE DOCK or PORT

Hi bstanko first of all , your entire videos not just this one , are extremely helpful , and they are the reason I was able to learn and implement manual targeting in my careers. I have a few questions that if you could answer would be really helpful. I've been scouring the internet for information on this method but I was unable to come up with anything other than a vague " they used the scope granicule method ". Do you have access to any piece of writing that elaborates on this ranging method? I also have a question regarding the " magic " 0.22 number. Is it just a number you came up with while testing to reach the correct ( already known ) result , or is it a specific number that is discussed somewhere ? If it is discussed I would once again like to have access to it to read it myself. Thank you so much for your videos!

So to the first question… no, I never found anything solid on the periscope reticule. 2. I worked the math out for a long time. And every scope mod is completely different. So that number was what I found to work with that mod.
