Thank you. My Mother helped house train SNOBOL, our Malamute, and we used a professional two-week boarding school for his training.

SNOBOL sounds like an awesome dog, thoroughly loved and well behaved too. Shame you can’t post pics in comments.

@LivingWithMalamutes We had him in the 1980s and early 90s. It wasn't a photo-taking time for us. We have some Polaroids and memories.

I received a male Malamute from a animal shelter in So. Ca. I had had German Shepherds, hounds, Beagles, Cockers, etc. but this was my 1st Malamute. He was extremely smart & loyal. I owned a machine shop & "Tobias" evaluated every customer that came thru the door. If he didn't like the customer, the hair would stand up on his back & he would make silent snarl face. That let me know to be careful. However, if a customer got upset & raised his voice to me. Tobias would step between us & growl. If the customer tried to put his hands on me in anyway, Tobias would lung for his arm & restrain him. We acquired another man, a Doberman/Hound mix. 2 or 3 times per yr., the Dobie would confront Tobias for "Alpha" dog. Tobias would always win. Tobias would sleep in the doorway to my bedroom every night. Nobody could enter my bedroom while I was sleeping. Now that was a loyal dog!

They are excellent at evaluating people and can sense people with the wrong intentions. I completely trust their judgement.

I agree 100% raw meat is good for your Malamute. I fed SNOBOL two different ways. First, I left out a bowl of dry dog food for him to eat on demand. He would eat it begrudgingly (he'd laydown with his head in the bowl and slowly eat). Second, I would feeed him wet dog food (e.g., Ken-L Ration (beef)) and raw meat with the bone at least once to twice a day. The raw meat would be beef or deer.

Many people misidentify Alaskan Malamute as wolves because television and movies use them instead of real wolves. Malamutes can be challenging to train because of their intelligence and stubborn streak should the trainer or owner lose control or the Malamute's respect. While a first-time dog owner should consider an easier breed, one can be a successful owner. SNOBOL was my first dog. I took him to a trainer who taught and boarded him for two weeks. Upon SNOBOL graduating, it was my turn to learn how to be his pack's alpha. The entire training was expensive (US$1,000 in 1984), even more than him (US$350). I looked at it as an investment, given how long he should live and my desire to have a good companion. ONE IMPORTANT thing the trainer taught SNOBOL was how to be by himself and not destroy our home while I was at work. When we (the family) went out of town, I would put him up at a kennel. I paid for two daily walks and two Burger King meals (Whopper with cheese, french fries, and water), and once a week, he got a dessert. He was always happy to arrive at the kennel, see us, and go home. I think he loved the scenery change, except for the vet.

It’s funny that it cost more to train humans than dogs but it makes sense; dogs respond better to a strong and reliable pack leader. I like that you paid for perks while he was at kennels, it must seem like a home from home for him but well worth it knowing that they are safe and content.

I was lucky enough to have a malamute for 14 years. They are a special breed and it was a privilege to have her. She had a very distinctive howl, mostly wooo wooooo wooo. When I was working I could hear her across the bay. She hated being alone, even just for a few hours. One day I hope I can find another one.
