Many thanks for uploading this!! Lyrics: Within the woodlands, flow'ry gladed By the oak trees' mossy moot The shining grass blades, timber shaded Now do quiver underfoot And birds do whistle overhead And water's bubbling in its bed And there for me, the apple tree Do lean down low in Linden Lea When leaves, that lately were a-springing Now do fade within the copse And painted birds do hush their singing Up upon the timber tops And brown leaved fruit's a-turning red In cloudless sunshine overhead With fruit for me, the apple tree Do lean down low in Linden Lea Let other folk make money faster In the air of dark-room'd towns I don't dread a peevish master Though no man may heed my frowns I be free to go abroad Or take again my homeward road To where, for me, the apple tree Do lean down low in Linden Lea

Belle, me tiendras-tu parole?

I have old women's secrets now That had those of the young; Madge tells me what I dared not think When my blood was strong, And what had drowned a lover once Sounds like an old song. Though Marg'ry is stricken dumb If thrown in Madge's way, We three make up a solitude; For none alive today Can know the stories that we know Or say the things we say: How such a man pleased women most Of all that are gone, How such a pair loved many years And such a pair but one, Stories of the bed of straw Or the bed of down.

It is a great Initiative to record only the accompaniment, but why not in the temp indications Gerald Finzi wrote in the score? He writes dotted half-note is c.42 wich is much faster than this. It sounds also much more logic in frasing and melody.

Thank you for your comment. However, I find that tempo preferences are very personal and not to be mentioned in public comments. My accompaniment track is within the appropriate tempo range for this piece. All my recordings are made after hours of rehearsing with various singers. Tempo is a personal choice based on many factors.
@HuubClaessens

@@accompanimentpiano8785 well with all due respect, it really sounds beautiful, but I don’t agree. The tempo indications by the creator of the piece are very clear, and in this case they are not at all a personal choice but Finzi’s. Apart from that it’s just very exiting to try what was in his mind.

I am glad you like how it sounds! But will continue to advocate for my choice of this tempo. As Gerald Finzi indicates, the tempo is c. 42 for a dotted half note. "C" here stands for circa- which means around this metronome marking. I strongly believe that his tempo indication was to suggest a grave, serious and somewhat majestic atmosphere of the poem.

I find this c,28,too slow by far. But many good singers do it around 32-36 which seems Grave but flows never the less.

Close my darling both your eyes, Let your arms lie still at last. Calm the lake of falsehood lies And the wind of lust has passed, Waves across these hopeless sands Fill my heart and end my day, Underneath your moving hands All my aching flows away. Even the human pyramids Blaze with such a longing now: Close, my love, your trembling lids, Let the midnight heal your brow, Northward flames Orion’s horn, Westward th’ Egyptian light. None to watch us, none to warn But the blind eternal night.

Bravo! And after the theatre, supper and dance Music! Ooom pah pah, oom pah pah... Up in the sky, someone is playing a trombone and a guitar Red is your tie, and in your velveteen coat, you hide a star Monica, Monica, dance the waltz Monica, Monica, dance the waltz Follow me, moon and sun Keep time with me, one two three one If you're not shy, pin up my hair with your star and buckle my shoe And when you fly, please hold on tight to my waist I'm flying with you, oh... Monica, Monica, dance the waltz Monica, Monica, dance the waltz Follow me, moon and sun Follow me, follow follow me Follow me, follow follow me What is the matter, Toby? What is it you want to tell me? Kneel down before me And now tell me Monica, Monica, can't you see That my heart is bleeding, bleeding for you? I loved you Monica all my life With all my breath, with all my blood You haunt the mirror of my sleep, you are my night You are my light and the jailer of my day How dare you, scoundrel, talk to me like that! Don't you know who I am? I'm the queen of Aroundel! I shall have you put in chains! You are my princess, you are my queen And I'm only Toby, one of your slaves And still I love you and always loved you With all my breath, with all my blood! I love your laughter, I love your hair I love your deep and nocturnal eyes I love your soft hands, so white and winged I love the slender branch of your throat Toby! Don't speak to me like that... You make my head swim Monica, Monica, fold me in your satin gown Monica, Monica, give me your mouth Monica, Monica, fall in my arms! Why, Toby. You're not crying, are you? Toby, I want you to know that you have the most beautiful voice in the world

The deeps have music soft and low When winds awake the airy spry, It lures me, lures me on to go And see the land where corals lie. The land, the land, where corals lie. By mount and mead, by lawn and rill, When night is deep, and moon is high, That music seeks and finds me still, And tells me where the corals lie. And tells me where the corals lie. Yes, press my eyelids close, 'tis well, Yes, press my eyelids close, 'tis well, But far the rapid fancies fly To rolling worlds of wave and shell, And all the land where corals lie. Thy lips are like a sunset glow, Thy smile is like a morning sky, Yet leave me, leave me, let me go And see the land where corals lie. The land, the land, where corals lie.

Husch! da fällts in Asche ab. Ruhe wohl, Ruhe wohl Drunten in der Mühle!
