Zidane had been such a unique player, of course he was going to retire in a unique way. I'm also not French so that also helped massively ;) I believe the general consensus was at the time that Materazzi was calling Zidane's sister some not so nice things, which earned him the headbutt. You have to also consider that Materazzi was one of the best defenders but also a very nasty one, very adept at fouling players just out of sight of the referee, which made many people dislike him. I believe he had the nickname "razor". I mean, I shouldn't have, but I was celebrating that move.
