I always thought as, you said, Gintama has always had the quality that was needed. Sure the old animation had worse quality than late in Gintama(of course). But it was never jarring, and the movements were fluid and well-animated when they did move. And when serious fights did happen, the show always stepped up and made sure to give us the best viewing experience. Gintama is just a solid show all around.
