The incoming president has openly stated that he'll be a dictator (and pardoned all his friends and a member of his family last time he was in office). He has also said that he'll take his revenge on the Bidens (who he blames for his convictions, despite the fact that they came from SDNY, who had beef with him long before Biden was elected) by "doing the same thing to Hunter". Whether Hunter is guilty or not is irrelevant (although there is evidence to suggest that this was politically motivated and the charges wouldn't have been brought against anyone else), he's never held political office, and has the right to be tried like a normal citizen, not like a president. He didn't get a normal trial and he wasn't going to get a normal sentencing. If he had, I doubt he would have been pardoned. Biden pardoning him stops Trump making a massive spectacle of Hunter (something Biden refused to do to Trump's kids, yet Trump was happy to do to Biden's son), probably to distract everyone while he pardons himself and his own kids. If anything, Biden has just protected his son from the MAGA circus - something we'd all do, given half a chance, let's be honest. We can't expect "business as usual" from one side, when the other side is going batsh-t insane. Yes, this looks like it places Hunter "above the law", but with the incoming circus and it's promises, it could just as easily be argued that pardoning Hunter means that he is not subject to harsher rules than everyone else.
