The real challenge is learning the exact placement of Manhattan network's tracks and stations below Canal Street. Total spaghetti bowl. I only learned after I started working in that part of town.

Classic youtube of the 2010s - I should do a video on this topic. I have quite a lot to say. When it started the Fulton express tracks were rush hour only, when the CC could cover the local stations in Brooklyn. One reason the JFK became viewed as obsolete was that system wide service upgrades were introduced which included all day C service. So the JFKs time and possible comfort advantages could well be enjoyed aboard A expresses (well every other one that is). I believe airport bound passengers arriving at Howard Beach were carried by the fare free parking shuttle buses extended to the subway station when the JFK Express was discontinued.

An interesting and well researched video. HOWEVER, your edits on your graphics are way too fast!! You provide information, then cut away before the viewer can read it. It makes an otherwise great video frustrating to watch.

Great video! Just a couple mispronunciations, understandable since you're not from the area Bayonne = Bay-own Tonnelle = Tunn-el-lee

You zoomed in on the map that answered your question just as you said it doesn’t serve Bergen County. It was supposed to end at the Vince Lombardi rest stop on the turnpike for some reason, which is in Bergen county, so there would have been at least a nonzero amount of Bergen. It’s just never been built, which is probably not much of a loss. Eastern Bergen County is in desperate need of actual transit but extending the HBLR to a random parking lot in the middle of the meadowlands wouldn’t have solved anything.

I just made a commercial like that to MTA to reopen it and make it 4 stops from times square to JFK airport that’s the express route, but in the local runs the 11 stops stops. I’ll give you a hint a waste of resources is just not a resource it’s beautiful flowers

The JFK Express was an out-of-box idea. I rode it a few times in the late 70s with relatives coming in from overseas, and the big complaint was the shuttle bus that room people from Howard Beach to the airport had weird schedules and we're usually overcrowded.

4:17 the diagram that appears in every single discussion of the H&M/PATH system, but no one ever addresses the fact that the actual track layout south of the wye is less complex than shown. Specifically, the two upper tubes and the two lower tubes shown at the bottom of the image are in reality one tube each, and each connects to one of the two tracks at the station now called Newport (originally Erie, then Pavonia, then Pavonia/Newport). All trains heading south from the wye shown, regardless of whether they are inbound to WTC (Hudson Terminal) or outbound to Journal Square and Newark use the same track. Likewise, all trains heading north toward the wye use the same track whether they are inbound to the 6th Avenue stations or outbound to Hoboken from WTC. The rest of the layout seems accurate as far as the routing over and under that allows all the movements to happen.

Much of this country's infrastructure is crumbling before our very eyes, these tubes included. Yes, they're still on the job, and that's a great testament to McAdoo, but after a hundred years of daily service, the tubes need some serious attention.

When I lived in Inwood (Manhattan) in the 00s, I'd take the A to Howard Beach when I was going to JFK. It may have taken an hour and 10 minutes (sometimes more with delays) but it was worth just to save the money of cab fare.

The expense of running that JFK route doesn't quite make sense to me. HOW could a single train line have cost taxpayers $19,000 PER DAY back in the 1980s? I'm assuming that's on top of daily rider revenue of something like $60,000. Somebody was on the take here.

Instead of wasting money to build a computer run air train where you don't have to pay a driver or a conductor when they should have extended the tracks off the a line and through to the airport which made better sense and money revenue for the MTA. 2.75 is all you would have to pay to go to the airport instead of that expensive useless air train.

A very informative video. I am English and live in London and have visited New York only once and that was many years ago. My wife and I stayed with a relative in the Bronx and also visited another relative who was living in Jamaica, Queens. By coincidence my dear wife, now sadly deceased, was from Jamaica, the island in the Caribbean, and I lived there for two years.
