Do you have any guides on getting started with making miniatures for small scales in Blender? Or any other channels that cover that? I'm learning the basics of modelling and sculpting but am worried it might not all be applicable to making tiny miniatures.
@turnerminiatures8 күн бұрын
Yeah unfortunately most Blender tutorials are quite generic and focussed on other purposes, which I guess makes sense since it's used for everything, especially animation/video game models. In honesty I just learned-by-doing. The only tutorial I used was the classic Donut tutorial to learn how the programme worked. That being said, Artisan of Vaul's KZbin channel appears to be focussed on making wargaming minis, and has tutorials for those.

NOTE - I really should have mentioned that, as-is, these vehicles would need supports to print; both the Bren gun and the MG 34 have islands on their barrels that would need supports added. If I do make a part 2 of this video with tank commanders, I'll make sure to remember to show supporting.

Thanks for pointing out the tutorial to me. So pre supported vs unsupporter is a hard question to answer: I personally prefer pre supported, but then i might have been lucky enough, that i never had badly presupported models. I am aware of the basics and did some models, but for me it is just very time consuming and tedious. Subjectively, give people the choice and offer both. As far as i know Elegoo ditched their own slicer with the Saturn 4 release, i still got it with my Saturn 3. All the reviews i saw of the Saturn 4 had only Chitubox included. I tried both Lychee and Chitubox and both work for me, i only use the free versions though i can't really speak how well the advanced tools work or what they are.

Nice instructions - must study the way you sculpt and remesh - haven´t been able to make it work the way you do. One thing I was wondering, would it not be easier simply to switch the AWI lapels unto a SYW coat......
@turnerminiatures5 ай бұрын
I hadn't tried so I just gave this a test. I'm afraid it's not a perfect fit; you would need to do some editing work. The lapels are too long and span down beyond where the turnbacks start. The inward curve where the coat meets across the breast is also more exaggerated on the SYW figures so there's a bit where the jacket behind the lapels is visible in the model's middle. I'll send you a picture on Discord.
@turnerminiatures5 ай бұрын
It bears mentioning that the coats, waistcoats and lapels are all new sculpts, not copies of the SYW equivalents. They're also longer than the SYW versions.
@Gold_Bug5 ай бұрын
To put the new legs on the old models is it just a case of doing the reverse and then moving the boots down? Or would there still be wastecoat issues etc?
@turnerminiatures5 ай бұрын
Would depend on your aim I suppose! If you wanted to put the new legs on but maintain the model's height, you'd need to move bits up, if you wanted the models to match the AWI's 8mm height, you wouldn't need to do anything except delete the old legs and base. I haven't tested this, but the waiscoat could cause problems, yes; it would "arc" forward too high up (above the knee). While it might look okay, it'd at least be more exaggerated than on the original model (look at the figure on the right at the start of the video and imagine if his knee was pushed down; the waiscoat would be stuck forming a sort of ridge above it).

What are the system requirements for loading the Main Blend file? I can load the other 5 Blend files and they work ok, but the main Blend fie hangs and crashes Blender
@turnerminiatures11 ай бұрын
16gb of RAM should be sufficient. The important thing is to give it time to load - on my PC it takes almost 5 minutes to open the file; this is because there are so many active modifiers on all the objects that need to be calculated each time the file is opened. Just leave Blender be and let it load, even if it looks like it's crashed.

Rather than drop the file into Lychee, all the strip creation can be done the same way in 3D builder. Afterall the app was already open. I have created hundreds of strips as well as modifications with 3D builder. kzbin.info/www/bejne/b2bIaouwgsmUjbM
@turnerminiatures Жыл бұрын
The reason I like to do it in Lychee is because it's a time-saver (though perhaps not by much); once you've made your typical strip arrangements, you can open one of your .LYTs, "save as" something else and then replace the models inside with whatever else you want to stick on a strip. In 3DBuilder you'd have to manually place stuff each time you want to make a strip. Again, not that much more time-consuming but I've personally liked just having a "one size fits all" template. But 3DB is certainly an option, yes.

Could I ask how many of these figures you could print out in one go and how long that process takes, or is it dependent on the printer?
@turnerminiatures2 жыл бұрын
Both will depend on the printer. Going to use resin printers as an example, since I consider FDM inappropriate for these (while it can work, it'll take a lot of tinkering *and* will take forever to print off a unit). In the first case; the size of the print bed. On the smaller end, a printer like the Mars 2 can do 320 figures (that's four 6mm figures on strips; 80 strips total). A printer like a Mars 3 will have a larger bed and so fit more. As for time; completely depends on what sort of SLA printer it is. A mono screen should manage these in 3 hours; it doesn't matter if it's 1 figure or 320 due to the way the technology works. An older pre-mono printer will be about 6-7 hours for the same. If you need more reading about just what an SLA printer is or why the number of models being printed at once doesn't matter: www.wargaming3d.com/2018/12/31/the-complete-and-utter-idiots-guide-to-3d-printing-in-resin-for-wargamers/

Generally only backers. There are a few exceptions (like the 6mm ACW figures) where models are sold with Blender files attached. I *always* will write "Plus Blender Exporter" or something like that where that's the case. If a product doesn't make mention of Blender, it doesn't include it. In the case of Napoleonics, the Blender files are only available to backers or people who purchase the files as an add-on to one of my newer Kickstarters. We just finished funding for the WWI project about two weeks ago and the next project will be the Seven Years War, which should launch within two months or so.
