***CORRECTION TO THE VIDEO*** I incorrectly claim milliradians aren't part of the metric system. They are, but they are not intrinsically related to meters. Thank you to @michaelhill6451 for showing me that.
@michaelhill6451 Жыл бұрын
Actually you're wrong about milliradians not being metric. The radian is literally the SI unit of angle measurement.
@glasstrigger Жыл бұрын
Looks like you're correct on that! Radians (and milliradians) are not related to other units of the metric system like meters so I think the point is still worth making. MOA are still not imperial like is often repeated as well. Thanks for the correction, always learning new things myself!
@michaelhill6451 Жыл бұрын
@@glasstrigger It is also not true that MOA isn't imperial. One minute of angle is 1/60th of 1 degree. The degree is the imperial unit for measuring angle.
@glasstrigger Жыл бұрын
@@michaelhill6451 Can you show me a source for that? I'm unable to find anything besides wikipedia which says it's an accepted unit of measurement in the metric system but is not SI. I can't find it listed anywhere as an imperial measurement. Not saying it isn't I just can't find a source.
@michaelhill6451 Жыл бұрын
@@glasstrigger Let me rephrase. Degrees are used in the imperial system but aren't unique to it. They are actually an ancient Babylonian invention which is why they are a sexagesimal system (i.e. base 60). So, there is some truth to the claim that MOA isn't an imperial unit, it is however used in the imperial system and other non-SI/metric systems. So, if you mean, MOA isn't unique to the imperial system, then you are correct. It's also true that you could use any unit of length to calculate radians. It doesn't have to be meters. It could be yards, feet, inches, miles, meters, km, etc.

I haven’t personally tested the Garmin but I know it doesn’t give you velocities throughout the bullet’s trajectory which seems like a pretty big missing feature for a doppler chronograph. For hunting...you forgot about exit pupil ..... This is huge for low light. 5mm is perfect.
@glasstrigger Жыл бұрын
Great info! I’ll be honest, I didn’t have a good understanding of exit pupil before so I appreciate you bringing it up! I went and did some research and learned a bit. Because exit pupil is just a function of Objective lens size divided by magnification I think to keep it simple just focusing on the objective lens size is easiest! For example an objective lens at 54mm and 9 magnification would have a 6mm exit pupil. Obviously as you change your magnification your exit pupil will change in size.
@antiquebowieknifechannel4611 Жыл бұрын
@@glasstrigger Yes! This is where the objective size really comes into play. And the reason I use a 56mm for all my scopes. I can see so well at last shooting light. It’s so critical!

@metaller_alex Thanks for the comment! Could you share why you prefer 2nd focal plane? 1st focal plane is generally preferred by the vast majority of people and I think for good reason. I know in some specific disciplines like F-Class shooting where people are shooting some incredibly small groups finer lines of 2nd focal plane optics can be preferred. But for almost all other applications I don’t believe 2nd focal plane would be preferred.

I have long shared the video from deermeatfordinner. Rob Arrington brought down a canadian moose with a 6.5 Creedmoor with a 143 gr ELD-X. I would not shoot that light. I have a handful of .308s. But, this year, I got bit by the 7 PRC bug and I just love the performance. And for hunting, my group is .41 inches (.39 MOA), which I find acceptable. I have come to recently value the impact velocity as equal to or more important than the impact energy. Granted, I might squeek by with 1850 fps, but I don't mind sticking with 2,000 fps. With my 7 PRC 175 gr ELD-X, that is 800 yards, which is farther than I am ever going to shoot. At shorter distances, some might say, well, stick with the .308 at 300 yards and in. Fair enough. But the longer ranges with stopping power are going to be better suited with magnum rounds. Rob Arrington being the exception, I fear many is the animal that is slightly wounded by an underweight round.
@glasstrigger Жыл бұрын
@ronws2007 I think people definitely overestimate the energy required to take down a target. People have been taking down very large game with 6.5 caliber bullets for awhile, but it does give you a little less wiggle room. You shouldn't ever have to worry about not having enough energy with that 7mm PRC though! That thing can basically fly forever! Thanks for the comment!

you don't even know what mils are...its an incorrect use, as the real term is milli radians, radians is the untit of measure, mil just means 1/1000, so to just say mil is meaningless as you can have milli meter (mm), milli gram (mg), even the mechanical engineering world misuses mil as they mean milli inch (1/1000 of an inch) when they use just mil....to bad you are just another guy on youtube that doesn't actually know what you are talking about...again in the scope world when anyone says mil its actually mrad...milli radians
@glasstrigger Жыл бұрын
Thanks for the input! If you watch the video you'll see I actually use the full name "milliradians" multiple times! Regardless "mils" is the colloquial term used and is widely understood in the shooting world. I don't believe anyone will be confused by my use.
@DeletedUser12345 Жыл бұрын
At around the 3:30 mark he says that mils stands for milliradians, and then at around 3:57 he says - and writes on the screen! - that it is an angular measurement.

He mentions milliradians several times. Regarding the shooting world which this video is about..."mil" as we understand it is the way we can apply it. If I wanted mechanical engineering, I would watch mechanical engineering videos. a bigger objective does not get you a clearer image, it lets more light in...so brighter but not clearer actual the bigger the lens the better it needs to be made to get clearer image, its easier to get clearer image from smaller lenses...clearer and brighter are different things

Thanks for the input DD! Here’s a direct quote from Nikon, one of the top lens manufacturers in the world. “The larger the effective diameter of the objective lens is, the greater the light-collecting power. This results in a brighter and HIGHER RESOLUTION IMAGE.” Here’s a link to a page directly describing the phenomena and how objective lens diameter impacts it if you’d like to learn more! en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Angular_resolution

I don't know about the .223 for long range. I would take the .22-250, the .243 Win should be on this list as well.
@glasstrigger Жыл бұрын
The 22-250 and .243 are both great cartridges! The reason I didn’t include them on this list is because there really isn’t any good match grade ammo available for either. And the guns you find quite often have slow twist rates making it hard to stabilize those longer higher BC bullets. The .223 comes in fast enough twist rates and has a great selection of long range capable match grade ammunition making it a great fit for beginner long range shooters. The 22-250 and 243 are still great cartridges and if you reload your own ammunition can do some amazing things.
