I’m not 100% sure I understand the question….whenever the crossover frequency is engaged pan knob will function differently than traditional panning….regardless of whether the track is hard panned or only gently panned - and this is because some frequencies are left up the middle. When the crossover is disengaged pan knob functions exactly like a normal pan pot.

It’s just that when a track is hard panned the effect of pan knob is obviously felt the most. But ya, best thing is to try the demo.

Thank you - I subscribed because I happen to be checking out the boz delay and got curious about this pan knob 2 thingy. Actually I listened to this on monitors, not headphones, and it still sounds better. To gain some clarification I went to their website. This is what it says: "Simple answer: because it sounds way better, especially in headphones. " Makes sense to me - I c ouldn't understand why you said it would only work on headphones - that made my brain hurt because I thought, how can that effect ONLY work on headphones, it should work more on headphones, but still be audible from speakers. I think what you meant is that non-mixing and mastering people generally may not notice or appreciate it since its a lessened effect.
@tourna-mix7557
@tourna-mix7557 Жыл бұрын
I can't remember the exact science behind it...but it's definitely a plugin that was designed to solve the issue of how we hear things in headphones. It has to do with crosstalk I think. On speakers I honestly can't hear the difference on and off, but on headphones (in certain applications) it's night and day different. There may be a slight difference on speakers but the intention of the plugin really is to make things sound better on headphones. Thanks for watching!

HI! Thanks for the video. Can you explain when/why you use a clipper before or after a compressor. Best/Mathias
@tourna-mix7557
@tourna-mix7557 Жыл бұрын
So when a clipper is used gently it’s essentially a way of reducing peak levels without actually changing the way a track sounds. I think of it as buying headroom. Whereas a compressor changes the sound of a source due to its attack and release which shape the envelope of a sound. SO to answer your question I’d generally put a clipper before a compressor if the source is overly dynamic - clipping prior to compression will even out the signal and allow your compressor to work less hard. But if a signal isn’t too dynamic I might put the clipper after the compressor just to lower the final peak level. It’s not uncommon on drums to clip BOTH before the compressor and after, especially when mixing heavier styles of music that require a very loud master. SO you’ll have to experiment …clip before, after, or both!

The differences of the "RMS" switch, better metering, mix control and expanded side-chain features make it worth another look for me. 👍 As a suggestion, try to make every A/B comparison the exact same section of music and as short as possible--2 to 4 bars. Thank-you. PS: Good recordings!

Best explanation of the Calvin on KZbin. First you dial in the saturation with stage 1 and 2. Then you decide how much it affects the frequency range with the shaping tool. A little bit like a multiband shaper. Can you explain the difference of a multiband and a fullband design?
@tourna-mix7557
@tourna-mix7557 Жыл бұрын
Hey man thanks for checking it out! Any plugin that has "multi band" capabilities basically means it can be used to affect a specific part of the frequency spectrum (for example a multi band compressor can be set to compress everything below 300 hz) whereas any "full band" plugin affects the entire frequency spectrum. Kelvin allows you to direct the situation to specific frequency areas so it kind of acts as a multi band tool...although strictly speaking I'm not sure it qualifies as multi band as there are no cross over points (like there are in Saturn). Kelvin works by using an internal side chain pre-saturation EQ (the EQ faders on the left) to shape the sound before it hits the saturation. Amazing tool!
@NikolausBrocke
@NikolausBrocke Жыл бұрын
@@tourna-mix7557 Thanks for the explanation. I have investigated this too and I want to add that in a multiband every band is processed individually whereas on a single band design, like the Calvin, always the full bandwidth is processed. But with the side chain filters (that's probably how the Calvin works) you can determine which frequency has more or less effect on the processing. The same you said, but in other words.

Cool, it’s worth owning! My experience is that it’s most valuable whenever you have a mono instrument (that’s panned) in solo….so like a panned guitar that starts a song for example. When there are a lot of other instruments playing it’s effect/value isn’t as noticeable….and of course, it’s only on headphones that any of this matters.
