2 years ago There was a story floating around for several years that Nashville guitar great Chet Atkins had sung Crook's praises as one of the country's best on a national grand ole opery television show. Tommy Crook's elegant, expressive way of playing guitar has made him an icon of Tulsa's night life for two decades. His talent is as revered by fellow musicians as it is admired by the patrons of Angelo's Italian Restaurant, where he has performed his distinctive treatments of jazz and pop classics for the past year. "Nobody does the solo guitar better than Tommy," says former student Tuck Andress, part of the nationally known jazz duet Tuck and Patti. "Nobody." Former Texas Playboy Eldon Shamblin, a guitar legend in his own right, agrees. "I never heard anybody play any better than Tommy," Shamblin says. That talent is on full display on a new cassette recording, "Tommy Crook." It is available at Sound Warehouse, Buttons and Starship. There was a story floating around for several years that Nashville guitar great Chet Atkins had sung Crook's praises as one of the country's best on a national television show. "I wish I could say the comment alleged to be Chet's was true," Crook says. "People have told me that they had heard about me because of that comment." Crook, 45, pauses a moments, smiles broadly and laughs. "I mean, if Chet thought so much of me, why haven't I gotten a Christmas card?" Atkins, though, was a primary inspiration who fueled Crook's passionate pursuit of the guitar since childhood. "I got my first guitar when I was 4," he says. "Dad played and performed at square dances. I was the caller. When I started playing electric guitar at age 7, he let me play music with him. "But when I heard Chet Atkins, that lit the fire. He made a guitar sound the way I wanted it to. There were times I'd be in tears because I was so frustrated that I couldn't play just like him. Someday, I'd like to sit on the porch and jam with Chet." It wouldn't be the first time he has performed with celebrities. Jerry Jeff Walker, Waylon Jennings and Willie Nelson have sat in with Crook over the years at Angelo's, Celebrity Club and the Sheraton Inn-Airport, where he worked 12 1/2 years. Though impressed with Crook's talent, many people are surprised he still lives and works in Tulsa. "I think people naturally think `If you're so good, why are you still here?'," Crook says. It hasn't been for lack of opportunities, which started coming his way before he graduated from Central High School in 1962. Country singer Porter Wagoner heard a then 11-year-old Crook play at Tulsa's Rialto Theater in 1955. Whenever Wagoner rolled into town, Crook was called to play in the band. While in high school, Crook played in rock bands with Leon Russell and David Gates. "In 1958, Jerry Lee Lewis hired Leon and us to back him up at Cain's Ballroom," Crook says. "That was a thrill. He liked the band so well, he took them on the road. I couldn't go because I was still in high school and my folks wouldn't have stood for it." Crook was left behind again when Gates, who found fame as the leader of the pop group Bread, left for Los Angeles. "Once again, I was too young to go," Crook says. In 1965, he did accept an offer to join the T-Bones, who were hot at the time with "No Matter What Shape," an instrumental of a popular Alka-Seltzer commercial. "My wife gave birth the day I was supposed to leave," he says. "I didn't go." Crook and his first wife are the parents of two now-grown children, ages 26 and 24. "I'm a grandfather, too," he says, "wanna see a picture?" Thre were other reasons he stayed home, Crook says. "I could work solo and make as much money as I could going on the road and being a sideman," he says. "I really don't \ant to be someone's sideman and I'm not into getting on the bus."Crook says time and living have brought changes to his talent. "There is an emotional depth to my playing," he says. "I've learned to say a lot more with less notes. My nickname used to be `Freight Train', which was a pretty accurate description of the way I used to play." Childhood memories continue to guide his music, Crook says. "I grew up in the post-World War II era. We couldn't afford a lot, but when dad started playing guitar, everyone smiled, danced and had fun. That's my motivation today, bringing that spirit to people who come to hear me." Crook says he enjoys playing in restaurants, even if people aren't hanging on every note he plays. "I'm not stuffy, neither is my music. You can eat, talk, and kinda keep my music on the back burner or you can get closer and listen. I'm happy either way." Crook says he takes his music more seriously these days. "Sometimes I'll sit for hours and play, trying different tunings and maybe adding a Baroque embellishment. I'm not prejudiced about any kind of music, but I rarely listen to radio. To me, the national anthem is `San Antonio Rose.' I love western swing, Dixieland, Ellington, Basie." Crook is hopeful his new recording will be a vehicle to expand his activities. "I need to do something now," he says. "In 10 years, I'll be 55 and still sitting here if I don't. I would like to play concerts around the area and get this tape released nationally. Windham Hill Records is considering it. I've got my fingers crossed. I can handle a little more success now. I couldn't have when I was 25. "To tell you the truth, though, I'm happy. Even if nothing else ever happens, I'm happy."

john c bernays from Jones, Oklahoma CORRECTION Tuck Andress Oklahoma World-Class guitarist Tuck Andress is NOT primarily self-taught Tuck was a Student of Tommy Crook one of the best living guitar players, ~~~~~~~~A lot of us play around on guitar, and more yet can really play the guitar, but few are in the league of this guy. Another guitarist I would put right up there with Tommy Crook is Tuck Andress, who Tommy Taught taught Tommy Crook is one of the best living guitar players, period, in my humble opinion. Chet Atkins once called Mr. Crook the best guitar player he knew, on the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson, no less. Better yet, anyone can go check out Tommy Crook every Friday night for the price of a nice Thai meal in Tulsa, Oklahoma, at Lanna Thai restaurant from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. (as of March 2007).
