How cold hardy is the tree? I’m in zone 7b and wanted a cold hardy tree. Someone told me the malika was very cold hardy.

Your soil is what killed it. I water with tap water in hawaii which is also alkaline. Soil should have zero organic matter in it. Sand, pummice, perlite, and peatmoss/garden dirt. In nature soil is 98% mineral. The organic matter belongs on the top 4 inches nowhere near roots so the decomposition does not use up the oxygen in the soil.

I'm not sure of what variety that papaya is. But what I know is that that papaya is a female one. The red lady papaya you mentioned earlier with elongated fruit is the bisexual one, it's got both sexes.

I know a lot of people have been commenting on the variety. You said they were seedy and I have seen concords being sold at the big box stores so maybe that's what it is. They look tasty. I will have to try and grow some. Are you going to do an updated garden tour? I'd love to check it out
