Bedford Val,at the time it allowed smaller coach companies to go up to 36ft, some of the larger ones like Yelloway Wallace Arnold who bought some,great coach until motorways , showed their Achilles heel.

This seems to have newer 100mm pcd rostyle wheels from later chevette or cavalier, however the viva had 4 inch pcd hubs and the wheels to fit (the difference is that the older wheels have a little silver bit between each of the four main silver 'spoke' elements. I think that may cause wheel balance issues

Forgive my ignorance but how is this really a Bedford when it has a Leyland engine. Didn't Bedford have their own engines ? I remember TK and TL trucks having red or blue series Bedford engines ?

Leyland engine duple body Bedford chassis.. the coach could have had an engine swap they all fit in the chassis
@peterw296 ай бұрын
@@michaelholt8226 At the time this was built, Bedford didn't make an engine big enough for this size of coach, so the Leyland engine was standard, whereas smaller Bedford coaches came with a choice of Bedford or Leyland engines. Later, when Bedford started building bigger engines, they stopped fitting Leylands. And the body is Plaxton, not Duple.

Some say the Leyland engine was a better engine ? The first Bedford lorry diesel option was a Leyland 0350 in the fifty,s. They had a comet badge on the front of the vehicle.

I remember school trips in these beauties! The faint smell of warm diesel and the teachers fags! Then later in the forces on our days off a few of the lads and I would get a coach down to Weymouth for a booze up! Wonderfu;l days - I actually got to drive one for a few miles as well!

For me at least the finest coaches ever built are the Bristol RELH's at 04.20 - such a perfectly balanced design that projects an air of friendly power, gliding along on it's air suspension, nestled into ECW's supremely comfortable seats whilst listening to the pneumocyclic semi auto click into the contented whine of 5th gear as the Gardner laps up the motorway miles with such ease - to this day I can't think of any vehicle I'd prefer to travel long distance in! Many years before becoming a designer - I'd go to school on Plaxton or Duple bodied Bedfords - but even then my design sensibilities told me they were the overstyled 'juke boxes' of coaches, suitable for seaside mystery tours - compared to the restrained elegance of the Bristol/ECW/Gardner.....a 'serious' coach!

I shared a visa with my mum, as a young driver, one with the 600 twin cylinder and 2cv suspension (the really base version!). Comfy and very economical for its time. It just a terrible shame it came along as citroen went bust and Peugeot bought the company. If the Visa had been developed just a bit more internally with less metal, more trim, and soundproofing (even simple rubber bump stops would have saved us owners from the whole car going twang when closing doors). For a little more investment in bringing it up to Fiesta, Renault 5, even metro levels, it would have been a top seller, as it had as much space as an escourt and bigger boot, and really was a proper 5 door hatch. Instead we got stuck with the cramped, smaller saxo/106 (with those awful pedal layout). It could have helped citroen keep afloat.
