Great stuff. Perhaps DF can be persuaded to curate a "Rarities & Out-takes" album; but I wouldn't bet on it.

Wow, the audio quality is incredible. this is the best audio version of 'The Bear' I've heard so far, signal is strong but clear, the tones/timbres are warm and everything is sitting nicely in perfect ambience on the Stereo image. Thanks.

I can sort of see what might've prompted them to drop it, the melody is quite complex, rather chromatic and arguably very difficult to sing. Fagen apparetly also dropped the tune 'Heartbreak Souvenir' because it was, quote, 'too hard to sing'. In any event, nice restoration and very cool, on point guitar solo. Thanks.

I see why they omitted this track from the final Gaucho cut. It sounds more The Royal Scam or Aja'ish.

There's a reason this and 2nd Arrangement didn't make the cut (the recording accident notwithstanding) -- they're both subpar. So was Glamour Profession, which obviously made it onto the record. Gaucho is a great track, but it was plagiarized. In hindsight Donald & Walter made one-half of a great Steely Dan album.

Are these horns original? What’s different from this version and the one posted by KZbin account “ Bleu’s Audio Archive “ . This version seems to have the final vocal mix without the interruptions by Fagen asking for mixing adjustments. Also like I said the added horns and overdubbed guitar solos. Seems to be a different bass take as well. I’m fascinated to know if these are two different full takes or fan mixed takes.

This is my mix of the original tape (I've for example removed Fagen's comments), with my own added guitar solo and horns crudely (extremely crudely) isolated from another version that sucks in my opinion and was recorded by a fan, but has a really rather nice horn arrangement that I love :)

Honestly I really don’t think that this was supposed to be in gaucho. Every bit of this oozes the royal scam. From the lyrics being comparable to the title track in theme to the groove being more funky. It would fit right in.

It was. It was recorded december 30th, 1978 at A&R studios 799 7th street, the very day after Babylon Sisters, using the same kit and setup as the day before. Also, Donald had different styles of singing in different eras, he wouldn't have sung like this in during TRS or even during Aja. It's a way of using his voice that he only started doing after Aja was released.

I keep browsing for a good restoration of Kind Spirit but always come back to this snippet. It's a crying shame that your hard drive crashed and all that hard work was lost. I think you are the right man for SD restorations. Your version of Second Arrangement and the other restorations are living proof of it, they are sonically supreme to all the other ones here on YT and maintain the true Dan spirit. Are there any news on this project?

We don’t really know whether Donald will record any further solo albums (although I remember reading awhile back that he was planning at least one more). But oh, how I wish he’d go back into the studio and clean up and finish all of their outtakes, and give us the deluxe, full length album that Gaucho deserved to be. Even better (or furthermore), go through their entire catalog of outtakes from previous album sessions, and give us a complete SD outtakes release. He must know that his loyal fans would line up to buy it.
