Excelent piece of art... I've been listening to this song again and again whole evening. There is something about that I cannot explain what makes me shiver and feel like one of those boney boys of Bedlam... I'd like to ask what is the painting on 0:09. Thank You and greetings from Czech Republic.

Thank you! I needed to hear that right now! I took a long break from performance and am soon going back. The painting at 0:09 is Portrait of a Kleptomaniac Painting by Théodore Géricault

Is there any footage of Dikran Tulaine singing for madness. (edit) no footage
@sandralynnsparks34684 жыл бұрын
I don't know of any available. One note about his name. Dikran said he never spelled his name the way you spell it. But we do know it had been misspelled on many bills and in articles, many different ways. Still is! He added the i to make his chosen stage name different from Tulane University. But Dikran is his birth name.

@@MarmaladeStex Dikran could never be said to have reached that status. He auditioned once but as far as I am aware never performed in public but once with the band, if at all. I really don't know where this legend comes from but if you ask any one of the band from the time they will confirm at least the basics of what I'm saying with 100% certainty. I've spoken to D about this personally.

The first time I ever heard this song, it was on a mixtape that a suitor gave me. The suitor didn't last, but my love of this song (and the other An Drasda songs included) did! I'm so sad that I can't find any An Drasda stuff in CD or streaming form...

Thank you for your note. I am just now considering how to re-master and re-release older material, at least as new videos to share on youtube, and creating new versions of what was done before, as well as new material. How does that sound for a beginning?

I saw you perform as An Drasda at a coffee shop in Marietta Georgia back when I was in Highschool in the late 90's. I just stumbled upon this video and didn't even realize who it was until the voices kicked in. I remember I bought a cassette but I loaned it to my girlfriend and never got it back. Thanks for the crazy memory flashback. 😀

The song first appeared in printed 1720 and is a REPLY to an older (early 1600) song called Mad Tom of Bedlam. This song (Bedlam Boys) is from the perspective of Mad Maudlin, it was first published in "Pills to Purge Melancholy". That book only had words, no music notation. The tune is relatively modern, having been composed by the group the Halliard in the late 1960s early 70s ( Nic Jones was in the group... Google for him). In an interview with the Halliard they said the tune was composed in the back of a mini-car on a mandolin, because that is all the space they had in the vehicle to makeup the tune.

the melody that steeleye span's version as well as your fine arrangement share was written by nic jones and dave moran; they admit as much. they took the lyrics from 'pills to purge melancholy' . the melody virtually everybody uses now is relatively new.

This version of the song is the first version I ever heard, on a ren-faire oriented internet radio station, I think from Live365, but I can't remember. I have been looking for this version ever since, and am beside myself with glee to have found it. Is there anywhere at all to buy this version?
@sandralynnsparks346812 жыл бұрын
Each of us do variations of arrangements, but because the Steeleye Span version of the TUNE is so prevalent, most people learn that tune. If Dionysis had said this is the Steeleye Span version of the TUNE, I would have said yes, it is. Dionysis stated it was their ARRANGEMENT. No it's not. Thus endeth the lesson.
@sandralynnsparks346812 жыл бұрын
Folk songs have variations in lyrics and tunes depending on who sings it, and who a singer learns a song from. Steeleye Span learned the song from a trio called The Halliard, with a tune by members Nic Jones and Dave Moran, which is itself a variation of a much older folk tune. As far as I know, from research, it's now considered a part of the English Revivalist folk tradition, for it has been performed by many groups over the years.

Steve - Different harmony, (really is, though it has parallels, in most places it's a tone apart) hugely different arrangement, (an arrangement means choice of harmonies, instrumentation and presentation) for a traditional Stuart song, the lyric of which was published in the early 1700's. The song was over a century older and had many verses, more than two dozen, and was probably known in Shakespeare's time. The name Mad Tom was used as an alias by the character Edgar in King Lear.
@sandralynnsparks346812 жыл бұрын
This is not Steeleye Span's arrangement. It's ours. Theirs is quite different. Bedlam Boys is a song that goes back to the early Stuart times.

See the five dislikes on the graph above? They were put there by a mean little group of bullies who have ridiculed me for doing this on various spots on the Internet. When bullies try to put you down for being ugly, they are projecting their own deep ugliness onto you. It's never about you - bullying is all about the bullies. They're trapped in their own awfullness. I'm going to keep on dancing.
