@joyoushapes How can you say that Santa Marta is "MOST AVOIDED"????? It's one of the most popular tourist destinations in Colombia. The city that tourists avoid (and shouldn't avoid) is Barranquilla, nearby. Barranquilla has much more cultural activities, and the second largest Carnival celebration in the world, which lasts for a month. Santa Marta is for visiting--for a few days, maybe a week. But if you want to LIVE somewhere--for a month, lets' say--you're better off in Barranquilla, which has more things happening. Tourists avoid Barranquilla because it isn't as picturesque, but there's more cultural activity there. (And for that reason the beaches near Barranquilla are less crowded.) Did you spend much time in Barranquilla? I didn't think so.

I don't get the "most avoided" title. It's easily one of the most visited cities in Colombia. Just Tayrona park is the most visited national park in the country.

Mexico, where I live is Very Spicyyyyyy, South America is NOT !! Not Brasil, Paraguay, Peru or Argentina, I have been to all !! They don’t like Spicy Food

You mentioned 2 of the 3 things you needed to do differently. First, WEAR A HAT! Second, insect repellant, and third, the night before freeze two large 2L containers of water. They will add a bit of weight to your backpack, but you will have an entire day's supply of cold water. For anyone else traveling to Tayrona, you need to bring cash, you can't pay for anything by credit card in the park, and I don't think you will have internet access inside. I know I never did.
