My favorite parts of your vlog are focused on the evolution of watch design, especially as related to how the precision of horologists was directly related to the development of industrial design, thanks to gauges, thermometers and increasingly precise measurement of time. It occurs to me that given the number of chateaus that are being sold (along with entire estates) as older generations die and younger generations lack the resources to maintain grand houses and castles, that there must also be more watches available at estate sales, brocantes and other small shops. My suspicion comes from following a group of people who are restoring chateaus (from various places, but who often speak perfect English). In particular, Stephanie Jarvis at Chateau De Lelande has a vlog, "Chateau Diaries" and seems to spend a lot of time hunting for antiques. Though her main interest seems to be porcelain, she will film the range of items available, which sometimes includes clocks and watches. She may know some people who would appreciate an horological historian who would be interested in meeting you.

Thanks for your positive feedback))) Always an adventure unearthing these lost relics, treasures and underreported history of this lost brand whose name still raises eyebrows 😊 . Take care

Being able to see the very rare beautiful watches and clocks must be close to seeing something like the holy grail. Also believe it or not having 8 patents is a great feat. For instance multi million dollar companies, to this day, might have 12-30 patents and that is over many years.

Thank you for your feedback.! So nice to hear this. Documenting this brand has become a passion, as the information is very well hidden and requires a lot of research to extract. Welcome to my channel ❤

Perish the thought! I was so amazed to find this article, which paints a gentle end to this Octagenarian and gave us tidings of his final moments! Naturally those familiar with him would have been shocked and saddened by the news.

Yikes! This is how I imagine I will die, a cardiovascular event, likely another stroke, on the sidewalk (possibly crossing the street to buy groceries at Amazon Fresh). My addiction to chocolate will slay me in the end ;)

Fascinating - Thank you for sharing! Where can I learn more about the "behind the scenes" stories of the watch and clock manufactures involved in time decimalization during the French Revolution?

Thank you for your kind shout-out! I'm lucky that Google pointed me to your Vlog about the Montandons (from my numerous searches, no doubt). I could find the usual records, but I don't have your facility with watchmaking, so I only learned from you today that "A Family Tale" existed and <click> it now lives on my desktop. Again, many thanks. I'm always humbled to be reminded that my genealogical research stand on the shoulders of giants. ;)

Hi & Thank you for your kind feedback This is an excellent point. I am currently sourcing watchmaker tools, which i still lack, and shall certainly employ this method more effectively in future! Really appreciate your viewing and advice ❤ Mike

Interesting method. Personally, I would remove the movement first to be sure no moisture is getting introduced to the interior. One thing I like to do is use an old ultrasonic toothbrush. It does quick work if the case is particularly dirty. But would not suggest that technique if the movement is still inside.

I've recently become very interested in pocket watches for the past few months and as I was looking for an older poclet watch to add to my collection I happened to find a Montandon Locle in a silver full hunter case with the Swiss engravings. After winning the bid war and getting to look at it in person, I would try to look into the history of this company and maybe find a production date. After looking for weeks I couldn't find any information to help me understand a whole lot about my watch except that it was made in the 19th century and that it was made by a French family that had moved to Switzerland. Your videos have helped my understanding of this company, but I was curious if you would be able to help me know more about my watch? It has a serial number on all three lids: 26550. Montandon Locle, in a cursive like style, is on the dial face. Nothing is marked on the movement itself. The winding/time adjustment lid has: Patent Lever 15 jewels Montandon Locle

The Chaux de Fonds movement you identify as having a detent escapement actually has a lever escapement like the other two movements you show in this video, it just has a different shaped counterpoise. There are examples of both the Lepine 5 and Jurgensen calibres with detent escapements, but there isn’t one amongst the three movements featured in this video. All three movements in this video have tangential lever escapements, which are Swiss lever escapements where the lever is tangential to the escape wheel. If you examine a diagram of a detent escapement, the teeth of the escape wheel must be able to reach the impulse roller of the balance staff. The escape wheel on these watches is simply too far away from the balance wheel centre for this to be possible. If you search for images of a Swiss pivoted detent chronometer movement, you’ll see what the detent escapement versions of these calibres look like. I’m happy to provide images which point out the differences between the escapements in question if my explanation is unclear, but can’t do so via KZbin. I’m a watchmaker, detent escapements are an area of special interest for me, and something I find fascinating.

Lovely video, thank you very much! One question - what do the acronyms SW, KW, and KS stand for?
@montandonwatch
@montandonwatch 5 ай бұрын
Thank you for your feedback! SW is a stemwinding model and KW/KS is keywind/keyset. The latter began to be abandoned by the 1890s.

Thank you Dirk for your feedback. This is the ultimate goal, yet sadly we have no material evidence directly attributable at present to Arnold. This may certainly change it is hoped in future, now that the artisan has been fleshed out with historical, genealogical and biographical evidence. To this endeavor we strive ❤

Hello. I just found a silver piece at a yard sale and trying to find out more about it. On the center wheel bridge is inscribed H Montadon. On the balance wheel bridge is English is Fast/Slow. The serial numberes are stamped on all the parts of the cases, the front of the dial, and on the movement itself stamped on the front. #14599. There is no writing on the dust covers of manufacture. Just the regular silver hallmarks inside. Would love to know more about it! Have a good day!

@montandonwatch Absolutely! I'm an amateur watchmaker, and we're in the middle of a service on this. Definitely needs a balance wheel/stem and hairspring. Mainspring and train of wheels are great and winds good. I really appreciate the help! Happy New Year to you!

Hello, can you send pictures of the piece to show its dial, back dustcover signing and the maker’s stamps on the case under the lid? Also the movement inside would help. These will help us to date the piece and also determine the maker’s information. Email : [email protected]
