One thing that foreigners don't understand about the Ellenes is that our commanding officers consider it their duty to save the troops because they consider them their own children. Seeing this the soldiers refuse to leave their COs and form a tightly knit unbreakable bond. This is why Ellenes are so hard to defeat in the battlefield even when totally outnumbered and surrounded. This stands in stark contrast to how other armies work around the world where commanding officers send their troops to die by the thousands in meatgrinders without caring.

I had the honor to work with one of his grand daughters in a company in Thessaloniki. I didn't know it at that time. Only after many years when I heard the story or Sargent Itsios and recalled details like the hometown of my ex-colleague and the facial resemblance I realized how close to the grand child of a real hero I had the honor to work.

The bunker was part of the Rupel defensive line on the Greco-Bulgarian border. The Germans were already on their way to Athens when Rupel surrendered. The irony was that Macedonia was put under Italian control, so they had to surrender to the enemy they had utterly defeated on the field of battle. Btw, there is no greater favor to Greeks coming from an outsider than invade their country. It's the only time Greeks unite. When left alone, it's all bickering and arguing with each other. When invaded, everyone unites in one fist. Go figure.

I know when you are united you can defeat even larger armies like you did in Marathon , Plateaus to modern day World War 2. Thank you for your comment my friend 💪💪⚔️

The amount of atrocities done by the Germans while occupying Greece is similar to the holocaust, they burned to the ground hundreds of villages including women and children, only the genocide of Palestine can rival it 😢

How was the conversation possible? Which language did they use? I doubt both of them spoke English, German or Greek..
@MilitaryHistoryArchives3 күн бұрын
It was common for the attackers to have translators in order to call the enemy to surrender. Germans had also translators in order to call the Greeks to surrender the fortress
@MaryMarkou3 күн бұрын
That is why the Germans will hate the Greeks forever. Because they humiliated them with their bravery and destroyed their plans to dominate the planet. The delay in the advance of the German axis, due to the resistance of the Greeks, caused the Germans to invade to Russia in the winter and the rest is known history.

If the Dodecanese was given to Greece was due to Stalin's will acknowledging the contribution of Greece to the war. Churchill wanted to give the islands to Turkey who declared war to Germany one month before the end of the war in Europe.

you forgot to mention that albanians were collaborating with the italians and the germans against the greeks. In the battle of epirus in 1940, albanians wholeheartedly sacrificed themselves to help the fascists and the nazis to subdue greece
@ky729918 сағат бұрын
That is shown in the colours of the map. Albania has the same colour as Italy. The Albanians let the Italian invasion force travel through their country to invade Greece.

Itsios was commanding two strongholds (two machine-gun posts), leading 4-6 men (each machine post had 2-3 men). So, after the first battle - and realizing the battle WILL be lost (because the huge menpower from the Nazis), he ordered (like a "modern Leonidas") his men to flee, while he would stay put and give them covering fire (he chose to remain and die to his post). Like the video said, two of his 4-6 men refused to obay his order and remained with him... Itsios, now not leading the machine gun post but OPERATING HIMSELF the gun... he spend OVER 30.000-50.000 rounds with his machine gun (he changed 6-7 barrels because the heat!) and he killed an entire company (about 300) "Mountain Hunters" (Mountain Commandos) - some of the Nazis' famous "Brandenburgers" (Wehrmacht's Special Forces, something like the British "SAS", specialized for mountain raids). In first, when Itsios and his two privates surrendered, the commanding officer of the assault (a major) ordered his remained German troops to form a honor-salute tribute to the surrendered Greeks! But, after this short ceremony, the HIGHEST commanding officer (of the entire Division) arrived, that German GENERAL the video mentioned and HE EXECUTED Itsios - and for the rest Greek surprise, he LEFT the other two alive to leave (he didn't even order to keep the POW)... The German general claimed he did that because "he lost his temper" (by watching his dead troops). So...? So what? It was a war. Troops WILL be killed. He simple REFUSED to accept that (LOGICALLY!!!!!!!) a single machine gun post... killed so many!!! ...During the D-Day in Omaha beach, just a company of Germans were defending the beach - because as you probably know, the Germans expecting the Allies' invasion from Pas-de-Calais (a very close-by to England French region). So, just FEW machine-gun posts (with MG42, each post had 2 men) they SLAUGHTERED entire "waves" of the American Rangers!!! In fact, there is ONE SINGLE German soldier with the nickname "The Beast of Omaha", private Heinrich Severloh... who killed himself with his machine-gun OVER TWO THOUSAND American GIs... because his INCREDIBLE BEST of WWII machine-gun (MG42) could fire 1.200 rounds in a minute!!!!! He was captured POW... nobody killed him because "he was ungry for his kills"... and Heinrich Severloh retured to Normandy (as elder old guy) and HE MET A COUPLE old American veterans who THEY SURVIVED from his shots - they were operating on the beach HE WAS defending!

I read about the crimes they committed in Kalavryta and Distomo. They also killed many in Crete because the locals resisted the paratroopers when they landed on the island. There are probably more, but I am not aware of them

@@MilitaryHistoryArchives Yes! They also massacred the people of Kokkinia! Also they were murdering every innocent villager and their non-warrior families who were unlucky to cross their path.. They were killing in cold blood the boys from 8 to 17 years old! They made us Greeks suffer as much as they could, just for their pleasure. They robbed precious artifacts, ancient greek sculptures and various treasures which were never given back ofc. Also their war debt was erased.! And ofc i do not mention the women who were raped by these animals!
