If I was his neighbor, we'd get along great. Nice work with the spatula. If you don't have a hold-fast, make one. You probably know this, but hold-fasts are great for holding awkwardly shaped items that need to be stamped or punched. Great video and nice simple, practical instruction. Thanks. KK

As a beginner smith, I appreciate seeing someone make something without all the fancy presses and power hammers. I wish more videos would show basic tools rather than acting as if a 2x72 belt sander or hydraulic press is a basic tool someone can easily obtain.

What was the oil type at the end? Tx, for the inspiration. I'll be making similar one soon.

Thanks for watching! I dipped it in canola oil to prevent rust.

@@markmartinblacksmith tx. Looks like its relatively fresh canola. Of course it wont prevent rust, it just discourages it from forming rapidly. I find motoroil to be more effective at this than canola, though canola is my personal preference.

Yes, I wanted something non-toxic to use around my recently planted blueberries.

@@markmartinblacksmith tip: rub lightly with raw linseed oil. Bake tool at 350 for 20mins or so. Oil will polymerize. Best protection out of any finish out there - outside of anodizing. I prefer it to powder coating due to non toxicity. Water just runs off, and the finish is quite hardy at being scuffed. Doesnt hurt to wipe the oil on the exposed metal parts after heavy use.

To stop it springing back like that, warm the whole thing up, doesn't necessarily need to be red, pull it tight in the jig, and as it's coming down just give the jig a tap with the hammer once. It sets the scroll, won't spring back.
