Fast forward to today and democrats are calling JD Vance, who served in the military in Iraq, a weirdo and other more vile crap. Tulsi Gabbard, an active duty soldier, was called a traitor and Putin puppet by Hillary Clinton. Oh how times have changed. You won't see Sorkin make a show about that.

I watched that debate and I wasn't surprised when somebody booed. What really surprised me was that not a single candidate on that stage was willing to step up and say something in Stephen Hill's defense. Nowadays, that seems par for the course for the GOP. Back then, I guess I was still idealistic. I was hoping at least Ron Paul would say something, but that was definitely too much to hope for.

Still relevant today. I don't care if you are white, black, brown, yellow, orange, gay, bi or straight. I appreciate anyone that steps out onto the front line and take gun fire for the freedom of others and especially for ours here in the US. This July 4th. I still stand by everyone out in deployment that are in active war zones or even away from home just in service in the military. 12 years later, and it has become worse. America had the temerity to elect a black president who, when we reflect, was pretty damned good. He took over the worst economy since the 1930s, and we got through it. He and we made mistakes, but he handed over an economy way better than what was handed to him. Well, the next guy who told us there were good neo nazis at a rally in Charlottesville, who didn't want to admit that the Covid 19 Pandemic was going to kill hundreds of thousands of Americans, who gave tax cuts to the rich. The expense of our children and grandchildren, and when he lost the next election, he behaved like a toddler having a favorite toy taken away and just pretended he won. He still lies about it for 4 years. And yet his actions emboldened the bigots, the haters and we are now 12 years on from the newsroom film and it is decidedly worse.

I was there in 1981. Things must have changed on one front - if you made it through your other schools (for me, Electronics Tech A school) you were an E-4. I made E-5 while in school. But the important thing had not changed. We lived in barracks with four men to a room, and all of us in our room knew (eventually) that Brian was gay. Several others had figured it out too, but he was our buddy - period. Then one night, a machinist's mate from Alabama finally caught on, because we would go party at the clubs in town, but Brian usually left after one or two drinks. We all knew he was going to a gay bar or some other thing like that, and we did not care, but this guy was going to "report that pervert!" We were forced to let him know that if he did he'd get his ass kicked so high that he'd be shitting out of his neck. Brian was one of the lucky ones, at least for a while. But I am sure he dreaded every transfer and new posting knowing that he might not have friends who would have his back. I lost touch with him after reactor prototype training, but I hope he never had to go through what you did.

@@rambo9199 Not in this case. This guy was in combat on a regular basis. You do not expect an Army Captain to do a TV interview in the middle of a firefight! The reason "in combat" is correct is because there are MANY troops in combat zones who do not see combat - they are support troops. My niece is an intelligence officer. She served in a combat zone in Afghanistan because she was trained in Farsi and Arabic, and could interrogate prisoners and help debrief local translators who worked with our people. She never was in combat - she wasn't even allowed off the base. So she was in a combat zone but NOT in combat - this guy was.
