0:30 - Are there alternative follow-ups to the drive rush? It's just subjective but I feel like you don't land it often yet what else is there? Can you mix your strategy is what I'm saying
@Samhain236 күн бұрын
in this instance it's a followup to keep pressure going. terry is a very aggressive character, although he does have some defensive tools they are mostly centered around giving you opportunities to act. so yes, i can maybe close the distance but not as much and maybe fish for more damage, or i can play defense and stay put or back up but both of those options don't fit the character and it's very early in the match so i also need to know how the rest of the match will go. so, ryu doesn't parry my drive rush + attack and he doesn't counter it with an attack or an OD uppercut (his primary "get off me" tool). so "successful" is subjective, but maybe not as subjective as it seems? primarily, i've gained some information on how he plays. second, my attack from the drive rush and my ability to follow up with attacks both push him further into the corner and chip at his drive gauge. these are successful as ways to narrow his options. the more you narrow someone's options the more it can crack their ability to play optimally / thoughtfully and it also can make them easier to predict and / or control. what i mean by control in these contexts is not like mind control but more like controlling space and their level of engagement.
@tomhenderson66736 күн бұрын
@Samhain23 The follow-up question is, is requiring the answer always worth the gauge lost when they do answer
@Samhain236 күн бұрын
@@tomhenderson6673 it depends on if they had guessed correctly? if he had spent drive gauge, they'd have spent twice as much gauge as they lost but probably wouldn't have lost the round the way they did? i could have also just drive rushed in and not attacked (or thrown) just blocked which would leave him open another combo but doing counter attack damage, which some extra drive gauge loss, which not only would have them at low health but almost at burnout.
@tomhenderson66736 күн бұрын
@@Samhain23 It's time for some game theory--- instead of thinking "it depends on if they guess correctly" think, what options are available, and can i present the opponent with options that have equally bad outcomes for guessing wrong. That's the first approximation. To a second approximation, if your options are A which penalizes them X for the wrong answer and B penalizes them 3X for the wrong answer, choose A 25% of the time and B 75% of the time, so that the EXPECTED costs (cost × probability) are equal. This is how we might bring optimal bluffing frequency from head-to-head poker into SF.

@Samhain2320 күн бұрын
you're not wrong. i remember this match because the lag was so annoying i kept dropping combos and was unable to anti-air or counter or control this guy properly. after he loses the first round, and just before this, he tries to not engage me on the ground. he can't hang back because i'm able to fireball him. so he's trying to get a jump-in on me or something? i'm still not 100 on what his game plan was, maybe he was tilted? he's probably just trying to get one or two combos off and then run the round out. anyway i noticed he just stopped cold earlier around 3:06 so i'm trying to throw his rhythm off, give him a visual cue that i see what he's doing lol.

4:53 - his kick after the big hadoken... is that him expecting a follow-up and instead you played a rest? did he flub a move?
@Samhain23Ай бұрын
I'm pretty sure that move hits overhead and the hitbox for it goes over low attacks like a low forward, shorts, and maybe even sweeps. I think I was doing a lot of low forwards into fireballs? So he's either trying to catch me poking or he's trying to overhead attack me because i'm turtling low but he misjudges where he is and just whiffs.
@Samhain23Ай бұрын
or he flubbed a move but i remember this guy being competent so it's probably the formers over the latters

1:55 - Is the second jump kick when Ed is in the corner an error? I'm still learning to read fighting games
@Samhain23Ай бұрын
If you mean when I whiff and he hits me with a drive impact? No, I don't know how or if it was a bug or something I wasn't aware of but his hitbox goes way back when he does the DI and it makes me miss. If you're wondering why I jumped a second time? I'm baiting a throw tech, and if he goes for a throw I've jumped over it and I'm likely to get a counter-hit for big damage.
@tomhenderson6673Ай бұрын
@@Samhain23 Yeah I was wondering why the second kick happened. If I did a second jump kick it would be because I messed up trying to do something flashier. How does kick 2 bait a throw?
@Samhain23Ай бұрын
@@tomhenderson6673 The initial jump in baits a throw tech. Watch at 1:34 is an example that I've trained him to tech throw on jump in. The second jump avoids the tech throw, and opens him up for a combo, see: 6:07
