Still the best in the land. I was 30 as a spectator. Chills up and down my spine when I saw them.

I believe I was in the drumline this year. My first (grade 10) and only year in the band before my family moved back to Canada. A great band and alot of fun at all the parades. Tall Flags, drill team...oh yeah!

WOW this is terrific!! I was in the Arcadia Marching Band in the 67-69 years, played tenor sax. Wonderful memories, so exciting those competitions were. We also retired the trophy, like this band did.

woooooow!!!!!!!!!!! This makes me realize that while bands today may play more musically, they look pitiful compared to this! The feet! The carriage! The perfect posture of the banners. And then theres the M&M....I like the simplicity of the banners that don"t move all around, just look classy as hell!

+Timbobtim4 I agree. The banners hopping around now makes it look sloppy.

The event was held inside the stadium that year due to weather.

Hi Randy - the rain was incessant the week of All Western. Many of the bands who competed at All Western were also at the California Band Review the day before and just got pounded on with the rain. Ruined many uniforms. I remember staying up in the hotel room trying to dry the feathers on the guard uniforms. This video doesn't do justice to how incredible the sound was. I still get very choked up hearing it...

I remember we marched EVERYONE, and even though we were the honor band, we still tied the sweepstakes winning band. HA! Couldn't stop smiling while watching this.

I love this, haven't seen it in years. I was very proud to be a part of this group and honored to be their Drum Major. Thank you, whoever, for posting this.

Thanks 1912. I should have described Dr. Berry as the arranger. If my memory serves, he and Mr. Landes listened to a recording (quite possibly what you referenced) and wrote the coda from listening to the piece.

The coda was written originally for/by the Bob Sharples lp - Pass in Review. In the original recording they slow down for the coda. The original recording was done by a British military band. I wish I could get ahold of the music. It is a great ending.

This was my sophomore year. I remember practicing that 180. It was insane! Our drum major that year was Richard Johnson. He was amazing! The group was divided into three. Band I, Band II and Band III and yes, we marched with everyone from all three!

@rbjnla You were awesome that day, it starts from the top. Great that you were able to see this again. Make sure you check the indoor performance too (I'm sure you did), another outstanding performance. To have one of Arcadia's best drum majors check in is indeed an honor.

It is so awesome to see this again. It gave me goose bumps. We were prefect and I am so proud to have been a part of this. I will never forget how quiet and tense it was while waiting to step off. There was this electricity in the air between everybody. My dad took some great photos of groups of people at that moment. Fantastic, we were soooo young. Wonder how everyone is doing. It was an outstanding group of kids. Thanks for the memories. Richard Johnson

An amazing performance! I can't believe the tempo and precision. It makes this old "warhorse" of the parade repertoire sound fresh and exciting. For anyone who doesn't already know, Arcadia retired the legendary Long Beach trophy the previous year under the direction of Tom Landes. This video is from the year they played in exhibition as the Honor Band, and Mr. Landes's 3rd year at Arcadia. Thanks to adjudicator Mr. Hrbacek for remembering this performance 30 years later!

What great memories this brings back! As front row center guide that year, winning Long Beach was probably the highlight of my senior year. With my own son following in my footsteps this year at our local high school, I've talked about this exact "marching graph paper" video many times. I never thought I'd have the chance to show it to him. Thank you so much for posting it!

Thank you for dusting off this old relic. This was probably the best musical performance at Long Beach during my three years at AHS (80-82). Slightly older Apaches may recognize a former AHS drum major as he passes in front of the camera at street level.
