Could you use this in heavy rain ? With no tarp
@thegreatoutdoors3990

You will always get water in the hood area around your face so I would always recommend a tarp as a n extra precaution

There is a hack where you turn the Bivy upside down. It's better than getting the hood filled with rainwater but not totally ideal.

Hi John, Cheers for the video, loads of good information! Can I ask, did you get the system new or through a surplus website and if so, what was your experience like, all good? I’m 6 foot 3 like yourself so know the struggle haha Cheers again Ewan

I’m guessing this system is unsuitable for wild camping due to its size / bulk and weight?? Anyone have any thoughts on that?
@WildernessBound
@WildernessBound Жыл бұрын
Just my opinion, but I would guess that varies on what each individual can comfortably carry & depending on the weather conditions you will likely not need all of the components for the sleep system to be effective. (You could probably get away with leaving the lightweight sleeping bag at home, unless you are expecting conditions to dip below -30 degrees, which I don’t think has happened in the UK for thousands of years) hope that helps

Yeah its a great bit of kit, I just got the whole set up. I instantly went from "will my sleeping bag be warm enough" to "what bits should I leave at home so I dont overheat". Set up right it will keep you alive down to -37c, plus combined with the gortex bivvy its basically a sleeping bag and tent combined. Thanks for the video. You explain things very well.

Update .... I used just the liner, the jungle sleeping bag, in a Gore-Tex outer, and slept at -2c. Dont get me wrong, it was a horrible experience and I barely slept, but it was not life threatening, just uncomfortable. I just wish I took the whole kit. Had I taken the main sleeping bag I would have been toasty, but the important thing is that this kit really will keep you alive outside the official limits. Whereas most kit on amazon will NOT function ABOVE the official limits they state.

To get the real low temperature protection, what combination of elements/pieces of kit would you recommend. I’m off somewhere in Europe where winter is always very cold. Some degree of protection down to -25° would be very helpful. Thanks for the great advice and follow up info 👍

@@francisoneill3784 I cant stress enough that if you are heading out to temps that low you should definitely get some professional advice.....but .... the full British modular system should do it. That involves the cotton inner, jungle bag, winter bag, and goretex bivvie, all layered at once. I would also add at least one thermal mattress of some description, possibly two. Something like a full length thermarest and/or full length foam mattress underneath. I recently went on a spring camp and the temperature fell below zero unexpectedly. (and I only had a summer set up) I was shocked about how much heat I lost through the ground and through the unfastened gap in the bivvie. I would also note that its worth taking a thin balaclava and hat with you to keep your head warm. You dont want to tuck your head into the bag and risk filling it with moist air. Similarly I would suggest taking a couple of emergency space blankets in case things get out of hand. They awful for condensation but can really help trap heat as long as you dont wrap them too tight or breath directly under them. Good luck on your travels mate. I strongly suggest getting some professional guidance and practise before your trip. -25c is very serious business. All the best.

Interesting thanks for posting seems to me you would use either the army roll or the army 3/4 self inflating mat, both seems unnecessary? I'd trade out the roll for an air pillow 👍

The bivi is a fucking trap. It needs to have a "burst system " almost full length of a side etc .Getting in with a rifle and then trying to get out super fast is a joke with the single end entry bags

The bit I find a bit annoying is that the light weight bag and medium bags zips are in different position. One down the side the other down the middle of the bag. It's a pain to zip up both when used together...plus there is also an inner liner you fit inside to help keep the bag clean
